I wanted to get some opinions on rust proof coatings for knives. I am interested in 'permanent' coatings (like blueing, expoxy coating, etc) NOT 'temporary' coatings (like oil, tuff cloth, etc).

Also are any of these coatings clear?

Man has been trying to stop iron from rusting ever since he started working with it. It hasn't happened yet. Best to take care of knives - keep them clean and dry. No coating will stop rusting once it is used and scratched.

I realize that there is no such thing as a perfect rust coating and there is no substitute for careful cleaning and oiling. However I like to give my blades the most protection I can, especially the ones I use in harsh conditions. Becuase of this I like to use both a 'permanent' coating AND a 'temporary' protectant. (Note that I use the word permanent in quotes since no coating is really permanent.)

Currently I use Marine Tuff Cloth for my protectant and I am very satisfied. However I have yet to find a coating I really like. Hence my request for sugestions.

Well, I can only comment on the coating I use...If done right it gives you 98% protection of your blade even after use and damage...

If the blade is prepared correctly, even if you damage it the coating still protects the metal unless you work it down to shiny metal...

For example we sandblast and use a heavy coat...This means scratches still have coating on them down in the "valley" of the etch...

I think Joe Fazio sells a clear coating but I'm not sure...Get in touch with him at http://www.kgproducts.net
