I'd be interested to hear what brands of safes you guys are using. When I look on Amazon i see Carbon Steel, SPCC and Alloy Steel options. I've read that SPCC is cold-rolled so pass on that. And apparently Allow Steel is the way to go? I think something around .6-1.0 cubic foot would suffice.
I'm considering this one (although it's 0.5 cubic feet) for $50 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UG9HB1Q?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1

I recommend Viking with a simplex lock...but the price is considerably more. I don't have confidence in the digital locks. YMMV.

The extra investment is worth it IMHO.

Without going I to details, you need to answer WHAT is the safe for?

With different needs you will get different answers.
Small hands?
Fire?
Theft?
Protection from the elements?
Confiscation?
*those above might all have different answers....

Most of what's sold to us as gun safes and lock boxes are Crap.

Thanks, Just something that I can place maybe 8-12 higher end knives, a little bugout cash and be wall mountable. Not too concerned about fire or elements. So, it's either the Amazon safe or a Viking. I have housemates that I am friends with, so I'd like this to be a good deterrent. Anything under 100 seems to be pretty similar but adequate. I was just wondering if anyone found something better than the amazon one I'm considering that's around <100.

Thanks. I am considering a Viking for 189, I'm leaning towards this: https://www.amazon.com/Viking-Security-Safe-VS-20BLX-Fingerprint/dp/B015PI6P3M. It just occurred to me that I'll eventually get a handgun. I think I need to step like suggested and get the Viking. Any opinions on biometric feature?

Thanks. I've decided to wall mount the 50 amazon for now, as I don't have many knives over 300. When I get a handgun, or sooner, I'm going with the simplex lock that you suggested. This is what I'll probably buy later:

Viking Security Safe VS-25SX Heavy Duty Mechanical Simplex Lock $269

I think you'll be very pleased with that choice.

I know the thread is a little old, but I have a StackOn that is very similar to the one you’re considering on Amazon. Close enough that other than the design of the keypad plate, it might be the same manufacturer. I like it for what it is, and it’ll keep honest people honest. So it should keep your roommates from fidgeting with your toys just fine - or even the handgun that’s in your future. If you’re worried about your housemates, or their friends, trying to break into it, I might consider finding new people to share space with.

I’m in my own house, so mine is primarily used for important documents (birth certificates, passports, etc), emergency cash, some coins, and my two primary EDC pistols. Keeps the kid’s hands off of things (though at 15, he knows safe handling and shoots competitively) and is a deterrent for any other visitors in the house, invited or otherwise.

But the real reason I’m posting is just a reminder that ‘out of site is out of mind’. Someone really determined will get into almost any small safe eventually, and if it’s got a key (like that one does) it can be picked. Bolting it to the wall is mandatory, and bolting it to two surfaces is even better. Mine is on a shelf, bolted both to the back wall, and to the shelf from beneath. But more importantly, unless you have reason to, very few people are even aware of its existence, let alone its location. You can’t attempt to access something that you are unaware of. So don’t even tell your housemates you have it, let alone where it’s at or what might be in it. And then, if convenient, stack a folded blanket on it, and let it drape over the face, or hang shirts and jackets in front of it, or whatever camouflage technique might be applicable in your situation. Even my larger cabinets are hidden in plain sight, so a casual observer, or even a would be thief in a hurry, might just pass right on by.

Out of sight, out of mind.

If you have high end knives and guns you want to protect, you might consider upping the amount you spend on protecting them to at least the cost of a new gun. Even a $500-1000 safe is generally going to offer you substantially more than a $100 version.
