Best Saw for a backpack?

I'd like to get a folding saw to carry when hiking and backpacking. I'll have a hawk along too, for small splitting chores, but really would like to add a saw, as they work pretty fast on 4-6" stuff.

I hear Silky brand is tops.... what model is best and where can one get the best price?

Thanks!

I love the Ultimate Survival pocket chain saw. It is a beast and can cut through wood like butter. It takes up little to no room and is definitely quality. I carry a small hatchet for the small stuff and it is all I need.

I have a Gerber folding saw that I use right now, and I had a sawvivor. I would definetly think of a Tri saw of some sort. The Gerber will get the job done, but in twice the time as a REAL folding saw would. I like the Pocket Chainsaw, but you gotta get a REAL one, not a cheapy version. Look for the rivets to be flat or as low to the links as you can get, or else you're wasting your money.

The Gerber was cheap and takes up less space, IMO, than the Sawvivor. And, I was wanting one anyway. Good luck, I hope I helped. Moose

I like the bahco laplander. I have one in my backpack and pickup both. goes through wood and bone great. solid lock mechanism too.

There's a long thread on this in Gadgets & Gear right now, plus a lot of oldies. Short answer: Silky Super Accel 210.

I've been looking at the Silky Pocketboy 170mm in med teeth (or maybe large teeth).

while I wouldn't chose the Gerber/Fiskar if I was building a cabin :), but for erecting small shelters, cutting up wood for firewood- I think it does a very good job, it weighs all of 3 oz and they are very inexpensive

Buy yourself a "Wyoming Saw III" and be forever done with your search --> http://www.wyomingknife.com/price.htm

You'll thank me later for it.

I continue to be surprised that this saw is not spoken about and loved by more people on this forum. In my opinion, there is not better product for cutting wood. It's light, solid, and fast.

What more do you want than that?

Get the Silky Pocketboy 130, 170 or a Super Accel. Med or Lrg teeth. I always have one in my pack. I happen to own a couple. I would just buy it from here http://www.silkysaws.com/

I use a sven saw. Thing chews thru wood like a beaver on crack. Light weight, HOWEVER there are some sharp corners in the horizontal piece that may poke holes in pack etc without some sort of sleeve. I worked backwards and just use a file to round every point off on the frame and now I can slip it into the "slot pockets" of my Kifaru ZXR without worry.

I'm going to try building myself a collapsible bucksaw like this one. Doesn't look like too difficult of a DIY project, and would be a great saw for pumping out the firewood. Downside being it would be slower to deploy than a regular folding saw.

I do have a Bahco Laplander now that I like, though I've been considering one of the Silky models with a longer blade.

Get the Sven saw. It easily beats the rest at sawing, including the coronas, gerbers, etc..... And as for the sharp corners, get some 100 grit sand paper and sand those downs, took me about 5 minutes tops... Love that saw. Cut's like a beast!
