Hey all - today I received a fantastic knife as a gift. Now usually when someone gets me a knife since they know I like knives - its typically not a knife I really want and I I have to go through the kind "thank you" and wonder what the heck I am going to do with it. Not today - today I was gifted a stag Anza in a sharpfinger pattern (out of the box for me) but it's honestly a fantastic knife. It's razor sharp and doing some carving and cutting up some veggies for dinner it's a great performer and would make a killer deer hunting knife. So it got me wondering - what other eclectic/old school knives am I missing out on? Thinking saw blade/file or generally interesting knives that don't typically come up on BF.

Let me know of a few or your favorites. I know this could go lots of directions but really trying to keep this kinda Indi rock. Let's try to keep things in the under $250ish range and not just list awesome custom makers.

I have four blades from Chuck Lowe at Bull's Edge:

I like the 'rustic' look and you can see the 'waves' in the metal from the forging.
All the blades are wicked sharp and on the heavy side. No sissy blades here.
The last three were custom orders and all were less than two hunski.
If you like this style, I highly recommend Chuck.

Those are awesome! I checked out his FB page and he also has a cool drop point hunter!

Can't go wrong with Chuck. His main sales site is on the handmade place; I think it's linked to his FB.
As you can see, he'll make you whatever you want!

Also looks like Idaho knife works has some cool blades in the old school style. Most are on the high end of that 250 range but they look sweet.

I have an Anza or anza clone that my father bought for me when he was on a trip in Alaska. I have only lightly used it but it is a nice little knife and came razor sharp.

The Anza is fantastic so far. Unbelievable ergos, great f/f and super sharp. Super useable and interesting.

I love the ergos on my Anzas, especially the way the smooth thumb ramp sits so close to your forefinger. They all seem to feel that way, whether or not they have a groove for the finger. It feels like you are controlling the knife with your fingertips. Note the visual pun on the spine.

Here’s another vote for the Michael Morris friction folders as well.

Holy cow that's awesome! I just check the site and you are right. Great movie.

ML Knives, Matt Lesniewski, did a couple as well for the movie.

Also have a small Anza I really like, but have trouble sharpening based on my skills. Sorry no pic of that kind.
Lastly, I have a bowie made from a file by Tom Goodpasutre, and a French ball end knife, cannot read the makers mark. That is the one I have pics of.

I like the knives made by Jeff White, nice knives made to be used and were not too expensive when I started collecting. One I have also enjoyed is a small, very thin Hudson Bay type by Montana Americana, if only because it looks like a knife that a fur trader would have had. More of a slicer butcher knife. The pics above are the Montana Americana knife.

Ok, found a few. The small hunter is from a rasp, made by Hardedgeknives knives (Kelley Ward), the bowie is from a file and made by Tom Goodpasture, and finally a camp knife made from what I was told was the leaf spring of a Roadrunner and made by Shaerk knives (I believe if memory is correct). I thought these were interesting as the OP was asking for knives made from other materials. Others I felt were rustic looking and different were the brut-de-forge knives from Lon Humphrey. I will try and get photos of them later.

@David Mary has been making some interesting machetes, choppers, and other blades from sawmill saw blade. He mentioned making a few thinner ones, like fillet knives, from some smaller saw steel he acquired recently.

We ran a few of our test knives in it. One is floating around with some testers somewhere and the other I have been playing around with, regrunding things here and there as curiosity gets me. Right nownit has been regriund to a big bellied tanto tip knife. I'll upload a pic when I can.

....cont.....my my Lon Humphrey knives, the hunters are 1/4 inch thick but have a good edge since they are flat ground, and the little guy is an early version of the Whitetail.
