what are some of the best sharpeners out there? im new to the knife scene and just trying to learn the basics. i am a camper and i currently use a lansky with 5 stones for my knives. it suits my needs for now and i do a pretty good job with it but its kinda hard to get a consistant edge. any tips?

Well, I'd agree with Ankerson that the Edge Pro is the next step up, but I think you need the next step down, in terms of simplicity. I'd go with the Sharpmaker.

But you still need to know how to use it. The Lansky will put a keen edge on a knife. If yours doesn't work for you, the problem is you, not the Lansky. Read up on the sharpening threads.

Step 1: Learn the theory.

Step 2: Get a Sharpie (to paint the edge) and a 10X Loupe so you know whether you are applying the theory.

I highly recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I have been messing with knives for the last 20+ years. I have made them, re-ground them, and sharpened them on many different sharpeners and I have found nothing that works as good as the Sharpmaker. In my experience with the sharpmaker, the only advise I could give is to use only the flats of the triangle stones and not the edges; then the flats like they suggest. Take nice slow Controlled Strokes and you will get a superior edge. This is the Only Sharpener I use on my Chris Reeve Knife Collection. The fact that I trust this sharpener to sharpen my $300 - $500 knives should tell you alot about it. With this sharpener, I re-profiled my poorly factory ground $500 strider smf to a beautiful 20 degree edge. It took about 1 1/2 hours, but the results are amazing. Enjoy !!

I would go with a DMT magna-guide kit, it will easily rival the edge pro in results and finished sharpness, Its also much cheaper.

The magna guide also uses the dia-folds which are great for travel use.

I love my Sharpmaker for what it can do, but only if the edges match the 30º or 40º presets. A lot of my knives, Spydercos included, aren't always 15º or 20º and you wind up spending time reprofiling the edges. Do the Sharpie trick and you'll see. Sure, you can wedge something under the Sharpmaker's base to change the angle(s) but that's time consuming and laborious. With the Edgepro I can easily match the existing angles much more quickly.

Do you have the finest stones for your Lansky?

If not I would suggest looking into those.

Then add a stropping step.

The sapphire stone from Lansky should refine your edge and the stropping will refine it further.

Nothing wrong with the Lansky for the money. The GATCO is similar and works for me.

You may just want to look into further refinement of the edge that you achieve with the Lansky.

EdgePro. Lansky works well enough for shorter blades, but is tricky to get a consistent profile down a longer blade because you have to move the knife in the bracket each time you want to work a different portion of the blade. EdgePro is more money, true, but how much dough do you have invested in your knives  ??? Have not used a Sharpmaker, but will add one at some point cause its just so highly thought of.

What stones did you use to reprofile it? the brown ones that come with it or did you purchase the diamond rods? Maybe another method?
