ok so my arkansas whetstone just shattered into 4 pieces, so now im looking for a new stone. what kind of stone will put the best edge on my knife? anything that can put a razor edge on my knife? thanks in advance.

sorry i forgot to mention that im looking for a fine or extra fine grit stone for putting a final edge on a knife

Well it seems as long as you have the patience, anything can do it for ya!

Are you looking to continue with oilstones, or would you be willing to venture into water stones and diamond stones? Are you looking to get one that has a guided system or will you be doing freehand? How much are you willing to spend? Any size preference?

yes id like to use a water stone. i just dont know where i can find one. no size preferance, i will also be going free hand and im willing to spend about 50 bucks.

I've used a King 1000/6000 with good results and it goes for about 50 bucks online (Model 47506), though others may be able to offer better choices

Good luck

If you've already got a good edge, a super fine waterstone will be good. I really like the Norton medium / fine combination stone for getting the bevel back in shape, than then I'll use a strop with green compound to get it hair-splitting sharp.

I kind of want a broken stone, to use as a pocket stone, but don't have the heart nor money to break mine on purpose. Since yours seems to willingly make the sacrifice, I'd use it as a pocket stone. And I'd get the Spyderco Extra Fine stone. I think they call it ultra fine though.

I have a spyderco medium stone that I use, works like a charm. If you want a REALLY sharp edge got with a good leather strop with medium and fine compound. I have a Strop Man strop and it does a fine job for the money.
