What's the best sharpening system for my knives?

I heard the spyderco sharpmaker is really good, what other ways are there?

(inc strop)

Edge Pro
Wicked Edge

I personally use the Edge Pro Apex to do the bulk of my sharpening and profiling and use the Sharpmaker to touch up the edge. The Sharpmaker isn't the best if you want to set a new edge that is anything other than 30º or 40º inclusive.

Or the Work Sharp, paper wheels, small belt grinder, Lansky and that pistol grip thing (can't remember the name).

They all have a learning curve, and a following. As we all recommend, it's a good idea to learn the basics of freehand before working with a system.

I mostly have conventional slip joints, the DMT aligner system gives me good results.Tried the edge pro but sold it.

You might want to take a look at the link in my signature. There are some videos in the listing you might find generally useful, and a description of the sharpening widget I make. Its a full service tool. Have been getting nothing but positive feedback since I started selling these - there are a handful of quotes and direct responses on the thread as well. It promotes good freehand form, so makes a good tool to use as an introduction to other types of freehand gear (Waterstones, India stones, etc) should you be so inclined. Still have a few on hand and will be making more.

Otherwise, the Sharpmaker gets good reviews as a touch-up tool, and many of the mid range aligner systems seem to have a following as well - DMT, Lansky, Gatco all make reasonably priced units. The cost of the more involved guided systems will climb quickly, as will some of the powered systems.

What knives do you own btw?

I too have read that the Lansky system is good for small bladed slipjoints. I freehand mine, never really warmed up to the Lansky.

Good question. I have the Edge Pro and love it. However, some of my knives don't have a good flat place to keep the blade steady on the table. A clamp system like Wicked Edge or Lansky may be better for these knives. I'm not sure, but I'm saving up for a WE.
