i know this comes up a lot so forgive the redundancy but since i cant search...

what is the best sharpening system in my price range, less than $50-75? ive looked at the sharpmaker 204, lanksy system, gatco, etc.

ive got arkansas stones but want something that will help me keep a more consistent angle.

thanks

I have both the 204 and the Lansky. I used the Lansky a couple of times, and it works pretty well. When compared to the 204, it is just blown away IMHO.:) The 204 is easier faster to setup, and gives better results in my experience. Now with the availability of diamond rods, it is even good for reprofiling an edge.

IMO, the Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 is the best. The main reason being its' versatility. It has the capacity to sharpen everything from serrated knives to scissors to axes and chisels to......
The possibilities are just about endless.

If you weren't aware, the 204 also includes an instructional video and book that will show a novice(or even a pro) the actual step by step procedure to achieve hair popping sharpness in their knives, edged tools, scissors, straight razors, etc..

Just my .02

I have used the Sharpmaker for quite a few years now (203 and the current 204), and I've always been pleased with the results in keeping a sharp knife sharp.

The Sharpmaker is EXCELLENT at keeping an edge razor sharp, so long as you don't have to reprofile the edge, that can take a painstakingly long time on a sharpmaker, since the medium grit rods it comes with don't remove much metal.

But since you have arkansas stones I bet you could lay one of them against the ceramic rods to set the angle and get great results for profiling your edges.

thanks for info guys. ill go w/ the sharpmaker.

dcon67 thanks for the reprofiling tip.
