Hi Fellas

In your experiences what is the best sharpening system available !!

I'm not talking like a $1000 worth but around $100 or so !!

edge pro looks good but shaprmaker has lots of good reviews !!

Thanks in advance

The Spyderco Sharpmaker is hard to beat, when you get the hang of how to use it. Works great with CRK knives, but I use a strop to do most of the edge maintenance.

There has bee na lot of threads on this. I'll summarise from what I've picked up here and experienced for myself.

Freehand
A lot of people swear by it and wouldn't use any other method. Downside is that it requires a lot of practice and skill to achieve excellent results.

Sharpmaker
Excellent sharpening system. Handles not only knives but scissors, fishhooks and a whole range of assorted sharp things. Very easy for beginners to achieve very good results. Main downside is that you can only sharpen at two angles, 30 or 40. Not the best system for reprofiling.

Edgepro
Probably the best out there for knives. Many angles and great for reprofiling as well as regular upkeep. Main downside is cost.

Lansky
Works OK but very fiddly and annoying to use, particularly on larger knives.

If $100 is your ballpark then I'd go the Sharpmaker unless you want to learn the skills required for freehand.

I agree with Gajinoz.

If you don't want to go free hand go with the Sharpmaker.

If you want to try free hand, check out some stones called "Carborundum" medium grit.

It has a grat grit that is strong, but almost leaves the appearance on your blade of a finishing stone.

They are the best free hand stones I have used to date for the $$.

If you have one of those and a good ceramic rod, you can have a lot of fun and get a killer edge for about $12 bucks, so you can buy a sharpmaker to have as a back up while you are learning free hand, and still have change left over to buy a clip fill for your seb :)

The Edgepro is indeed the ultimate system, but excels at the 'V' grind because it holds the angle perfectly. I keep my CRK blades with the slightly convex edge they leave the shop with. The strop is the only way I can do this.

Thanks fellas - not often I get a response on this forum. My sebbie is getting a little blunt from being used so much and it wants a nice sharpen !!

Now to find a supplier who will ship to the UK - I really like the edge pro !!

Wow, from the dealer himself. I'd go with the sharpmaker, but YOU GOTTA learn to freehand one day. Nothing like the satisfaction of no rigs. I recommend DMT stones or Spyderco's benchstones. Norton's India Aluminum oxide cuts fast and leaves a nice finish.

Sharpmaker!!! For reprofiling, get the accessory diamond "stones." Expensive but worth it. Also get the accessory, extra-fine stones, they give a nice shiny polish to the newly sharpened edge.

I have been looking into this and think I will get the edge pro (pro model), with the idea of maybe setting up a small sharpening business here in the UK if I am any good at it.

:p
