have several sheath knives i carry on a regular basis in the fall/winter, and dearned if the one w/the best designed sheath, for me anyway, is my old gerber mk 1 - a leather sheath w/a thumb break, metal belt clip, leather construction - really works great for me, draws easy, carries well, secures knife well - am suprised no one offers sheaths like this anymore, everyone wants kydex i guess........would buy one to fit my companions, razorbacks, etc in a heartbeat if i could find something similar offered.....dont get me wrong, kydex is ok, but i really think the gerber design is pretty good for an old design, imho or for that matter a new design - guess i have had the mk1 for 20+ yrs...

Hey Sifu....

In their time,,they were the Cats A$$..I've had several of them,,there are a few things that bothered me about them though..

One being,, that strap always stretched,,then the knife would flop around...The other is those blasted Boot clips..Handy,,but didn't hold worth a darn.....

Now put that same blade into one of my rigs, with a decent G-clip, and you've got a Grab'N Draw rig that will do Whatever you want it to...

Leather has it's place,,but for a tactical/self defensive blade that deploys lightening fast,,, i'll take synthetics any day of the week...

I don't like kydex myself. Always has that huge 'lip' around the blade where it's riveted together. Makes noise when the blade is drawn or replaced. Scratches up parts of the knife 'cause it relies on grabbing some area of the tool. And these sheaths are stiff, once the knife is drawn, there still isn't any flexibility. Alot of people must love 'em tho, it's practically all you can get these days.

Hey Hard Heart....

That's because you haven't had one of mine...:)

The reason theres so much of it around is that you can virtually make it do anything you want it to....

You want to wear it upside down??
Feel free (with the right sheath)

As far as it scratching???

Contrary to popular belief It's not(always) the Kydex scratching the blade...

No straps Snaps Buckles or any of that stuff to get in your way,, Grab and Draw,,, all blade baby!!.

Noisy,, Yaaa sometimes..Not sure why this is a problem,,not too often you need a silent draw...

For practical purposes it Simply can't be beat....It's not a fad as some people think it is..

A properly made synthetic sheath will do it's job flawlessly day in and day out,,and should never change....

Try wearing an IWB leather rig against your sweaty skin for long periods of time and watch what happens...

Definately a personal thing though...

uhhh no offense but i have a normark sheath, and its the bomb as far as kydex goes, but i like the old gerber sheath better no offense - as far as stretching i have had mine for 20+ yrs, and it hasnt yet soo- and the metal spring works just fine too - imho the kydex, especially untill 'broken in' holds the knife too securly, while ya can draw plenty fast w/the old style - especially if ya train w/a thumbreak pistol holster - again nothing against ya, love your stuff, but i like the old gerber mk 1 style the best.....

Eric-I've been emailing you about a sheath order for a Socom and a Socom Elite we spoke about in June. I haven't heard anything back-has your email address changed?

Hey Sifu....

No problem...

My EDC for 15 years was a Gerber MKI,LOve that knife and both the blade and sheath served me very well...

Actually i had a couple of these along with a Gardian and a MKII..
Maybe it was just me,,but I had serious retention problems with the strap and thumb break on mine...The leather on my MKI after this period of use was almost completely destroyed, and remember doing extensive surgery to it several times with thread and electrical tape just to keep it together...

The clip on my Gardian gave me the most problems,,it never held as the knife was drawn...

Definately though,,for their time it was a Great sheath..Hell I carried that thing for 15 years without that much of a problem...
As far as thumb breaks go,, yaa once you get use to them,,they work fine..No offense taken..:)

Greg...

Hmmm...Not sure what was happening but try here...
There is another Eric with a very similar address that gets my mail all the time...:(

That's the address I used-I resent the message so let me know if it doesn't show up on your end.

My fav sheath at the moment is the custom one with my custom knife from Doug Mondt. I designed some of the features myself! Something about good quality leather...

Otherwise I am seriously impressed by the Eagle sheath with my D2 Ka Bar fixed blade. The Gerber sheath with my BMF is nice also. How about the plastic sheath with my Phrobris III M9 Field knife?:D
