Hey all,

I'm looking to sell off some of my collection. Problem is I've never shipped a knife before. Does anyone have any advise to share?
I know that USPS is a popular choice, but they also don't like to ship pointy objects from what their website says. And unfortunately I'm going to want to insure some of my knives. Anyone know how to get around declaring restricted materials and still get insurance?

The standard shipping method appears to be:

USPS flat rate box with delivery confirmation and optional insurance if package is worth more than $200.00.

I'm pretty sure your already insured up to $200.00

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

priority mail box is usually a little cheaper than flat rate unless you're shipping more than 2 pounds. I insure anything worth more than $50 - it adds $1.75 to the cost and I just figure it into my pricing. over $200 is a bit more but not much.
Delivery confirmation is $.95 and is well worth it.
Stuff the box well so it doen't rattle.

Quite a few of the knives I've bought online have come in small Priority Mail boxes, and I've never had a problem. And from a shipper's perspective, they're the perfect size for most folders.

I think the warning about "sharp objects" on the USPS website is meant to prevent people from sending loose or exposed knives, tools, etc. -- basically anything that could puncture the packaging and either fall out or injure someone. As long as you ship folders closed and fixed blades in their sheaths (or with blade wrapped if they didn't come with a sheath), I don't think you have to worry about running afoul of USPS's content restrictions.

I've shipped many knives with usps. I just wrap them up good with newspaper and put them in a priority mail box taped up really good. I always get a tracking number/delivery conformation.

I ship everything USPS Priorty Mail and use their boxes.

I don't like to ship anything with FedEx or UPS anymore because they're irresponsible with packages around here. They will just leave them on the door step and take off, no worries if you sign for it or not. I've never had anything stolen, but when I stayed at a dorm a student had his laptop stolen because they simply left it outside on the steps of the dorms.

So yeah, I ship using USPS and try to use that when I order.

+1 on the USPS.

It's been my experience that the USPS Priority Mail is quite a bit faster than UPS and Fed Ex.

I ship almost all of my knives using USPS Small Flat Rate Priority and after delivery confirmation and insurance, it usually costs about $10. Just use old news paper or plastic bags to fill in any empty spaces in the box to make sure it doesn't bang around and potentially damage the packaging and falling out. I can usually fit 2 Spyderco or Benchmade boxes in one of the small flat rate boxes.

I have also used them to ship all over the planet and never had a problem.

I usually pick up a handful of small flat rate boxes, and do the click and ship deal on the USPS website. Its quick and you dont have to wait in any lines at the post office. Its also a little bit cheaper than going to the post office and delivery confirmation is free for the online shipping. All you have to do is print the label, put it on a box, and drop it off at the PO. I have shipped this way many times with no problems

USPS Priority flat rate boxes are the way to go, you can fit just about any folder into a small flat rate box for 4.85 with delivery confirmation/tracking information. If you want insurance you can purchase up to 500 bux worth on the net and print your labels out and drop them in your box and your carrier can pick them up.

If you want more insurance you can go to the office and purchase up to 5000 bux worth.

You get a cheaper rate if you go to usps.com and print off your own label.

I've never had any trouble with USPS and they ship quick with priority, usually everything gets there in 2 days, 3 days max.

Quick easy and cheap with good features.
