Best size for a strop?

I have an old weight lifting belt that I am going to canabalize for a new strop. the solid part of the leather is about 3/8"X5"X30". I am wondering the consensus on what is the best size for a new strop? Should I just cut it in half and have 2 pieces that are 5"x15"? Or would it be just as good to have 4 pieces that are 2.5"x15"? What is the best width?

Thanks
Doc

Or, would there be any reason to keep a 5"x30" piece of leather?

I would use the largest size that's practical for you to store and work with (assuming we are not talking about for field use).

For me, length is more important than width, unless working with really long blades.

Basically, I just like to be able to have enough length in the strop to get a complete stroke down the edge on each pass comfortably. You're moving the blade axially and laterally at the same time, so need to have enough "run" to get down the whole edge.

If you have exotic blades or recurves. Then it would be smart to make a thinnner strop to have on hand..

Yeah, good point. Maybe even a convex strop in extreme cases. The only recurved edges I have are pretty subtle, so never ran into that problem.
