Best Small Budget folder

I got my girlfriend a Byrd Robin g10 and I love that thing. Zero blade play, great ergos....

Not much experience with those other knives...

Spyderco Dragonfly 2 if you can swing it. Otherwise the Spyderco Cat or Cold Steel Tuff Lite

I have a Byrd Tern. It is a slippie. Wasn't too sure about it when I got it, but it is my current EDC rotation. After carrying and using it for a while, the pivot worked in a bit and I can open it one handed using the Byrd hole. Cuts well, sharpens up easy.

Don't have any of the other knives.

I haven't handled any of the Byrd series, but I have had a few from the Tenacious family (not the Ambitious specifically though). If you're interested in the Spydercos, I'd pass on those save up a bit more for a Dragonfly or Delica, both of which are excellent knives.

The knives you listed seem to be in the $20-30 range. Based on that, here are some thoughts:

$20 - KaBar Dozier Folding Hunter, Kershaw Chill, Kershaw OSO Sweet
$25 - Buck Small Vantage Select, Ontario RAT-2, Kershaw Volt II
$30 - Kershaw Scallion, Kershaw Cryo, ESEE/BRK Zancudo

If you're okay with blems (cosmetic irregularities), Kershawguy has a Skyline or Leek for just under $30 as well.

Camillus "Hustle" maybe the best $25 I have ever spent. Liner lock, sharp aus-8 blade is dead centered :) locks up nicely at about 40%

The Meadowlark is a solid knife, I had one for a while. I would personally recommend either a Leek or Skyline blem from Kershawguy.com and call it a day. I can't imagine many ways to beat that value.

Cold steel tuff lite is another option

This. May be a bit less versatile than some other blade shapes, but a wharncliffe is perfect for office EDC and the Tuff Lite is really well done. It's the smallest folder that can still give me a confident 4-finger grip, which matters to me.

+1 for Opinel if what you are looking for is a "solid all around" budget pocket knife

Spyderco Ambitious vs Byrd robin vs Byrd Meadowlark vs Byrd Tern vs Kershaw OD-2. What do you prefer and why?

Depends ?

for a small light use watch pocket knife the OD-2 is fantastic and fun to flip

for cutting tasks that require a better/stronger grip I'd recommend the Byrds.

I say get one of each :)

the OD-2 is discontinued, so hurry on that one
