I need some 52100 in a 1-inch round bar (more or less).

Anybody got a good supplier?

(while I'm at it....)

Has anybody ever seen 1095 in one-inch round bars? square bars would be ok too probably...(for either)

Daniel,

It's a small world..........I just asked Nick wheeler the same question Sunday afternoon.
He suggested Fry Steel. Their 52100 is vacuum (re)melted and should be super clean. I checked their web site (frysteel.com) and they offer it in a great variety of sizes.

Daniel, I get all mine from Mcmaster carr, I just got a new order from them last week and did a test blade to make sure it would heat treat like the last batch I had, believe its fantastic steel. I'll post some pictures of my tests tonight or tomorrow. I made 100 rope cuts from a lay of a 1" hemp rope, chopped a 2x4 in half 2 times and it would still shave arm hair. did the bend test and it made the 90 with no cracks and rebounded very well for just being a 6" blade, a 10" blade would probably have showed hardly any bend. I've got a 52100 axe in the process to, can't wait to do some bad a** testing with it.

Daniel, if you want 1095 in the round, just get ( W1 drill rod ), it's readily available and is a better quality tool steel with 1% carbon and very little else.
Enco usually has the best price but I have quite a bit and haven't bought any lately. Don't know about the 52100.

I probably just need a 12" bar or two to test at first, but would like to have it more regularly.

Have any on hand, Tony? Shoot me an email.

I couldn't find prices on the frysteel.com website. Did I miss it somehow?

Ray - looks like your stuff is cheapest so far....

Don - I was hoping to get a good quench line, but with oil. I've heard W2 do as well as the 10xx...but I've only ever seen it done in water or brine, and I'm not too excited about that just yet. (the "ping" and I are not friends - want to keep it that way)

I quench all my clay coated blades in OIL, no water quench for me and W1 is my favorite steel. W1 and 1095 are basicly the same with W1 being a better quality steel. I have been getting some of my best hamons from W1 quenched in oil, I love the stuff. I like W2 also and quench it in oil, NO WATER FOR ME.
