I've got a friend who drives semi's for FedEx ground.

I noticed the other day he's got an old Buck that's seen better days -- it's been used HARD!

I'd like to find him a 3.5" or less blade, Spyderco. Fully-serrated.

Has to be really heavy-duty tough and made for a big guy.

Suggestions?

Mike

If I had a lot of boxes to cut I would be looking for either a Calypso or a Calypso JR.

Those knives are about the closest thing I've ever seen to a quality folding boxcutter.

However, I think plain edge might be better for cutting cardboard as long as you keep it nice and sharp. Granted you couldn't "saw" with it but there is a lot less to get hung up as well.

Get your friend an Endura. It would be just about the perfect knife given the stated criteria.

All good suggestions but I recommend against a Calypso Jr. in serrated edge. The serrations on my Calypso Jr. hang up on everything and it drives me crazy. I hate opening boxes with it, and that's the reason I bought it in the first place. (I would imagine the full-size Calypso has the same problem in SE.) I much prefer the Delica/Endura in SE. I love the Calypso Jr. in PE, though.

I own a bunch of Spydies (24, I think  ). IMHO, the best box opener isn't heavy duty tough and isn't serrated -- it's the PE Cricket. PE Merlin might be another good choice.

I would have 'cept Michael is looking for: "a 3.5 inch or less blade...Fully-serrated".

The Chinook has a 3.75 inch plain or combo-edge blade.

The best 2 I've used on boxes were my Tufram SE ATS-55 Cricket... and my SS PE ATS-55 Dragonfly...

The cricket I'd just hook that top curve in, and rip it open...

dragonfly I had a bit more fun with, used the base for cutting flaps, and my slightly-tanto'ed(rounded from dropping, then self grind) tip to open tape/envelopes(packing invoices and such). the flat grind just glided through.

With the SS 'Fly IWB, you don't even notice it.

Ha, it was more of a joke as I think the Chinook is a bit much for a box opener!;)
I do like the fully serrated Delica. I have one in blue.

I'd either go the direction of a regular box cutter (very thin, outrageously sharp plain-edge blade) or go with a hooked blade.

The plain edge Calypso Jr. will be just awesome in this role. Can I ask why you're constraining this to serrated blades only?

Or, for a curved blade, there's the Harpy or the zytel-handled equivalent.

Me, I'd take a plain edge Calypso Jr. if it were me personally doing this, no question.

For a box cutter/opener, the Calypso Jr. PE is the best, IMHO. I used mine to cut up the HUGE box that my wife's exercise machine came in, without ANY difficulties. This took me by surprise considering the size of this small Spydie.

Another vote for the Harpy. I love my G-10. Haven't found another knife that does pull-cuts nearly as well.

PE Merlin first choice, serrated Harpy second. Lots of power and lots of control in the hawksbill blade once you get used to using it.

Native CE (really it's SE) or Rescue

I demolished many boxes w/ those knives, never got hung up in the cardboard.

Merlin SE is OK, cuts through cardboard well, and the blade is thin, but I don't like the way it cuts through packing tape to open a box.

I was hoping this would be simpler. Seems like you've recommended one of every Spyderco made!

I'll make up a list, now that I know how many we're talking about, and do a real poll.

Thanks,

Mike
