What is the best Spyderco steel ??
And what model of Spayderco knife is the top quality ??

From personal experience only: StarMate, Military, BF Native! Note that all 3 are in CPM440v steel.

Most people, myself included, would say 440-V for the best steel.

As far as the best folder they make, probably the Military or Starmate. Both of these knives also use 440-V.

I will throw in my vote for 440V. As for the particular model, I can only speak for the Military as it is the only one I own.

I do hope to get a Starmate here soon.

Well, I am enamored of CPM440V, but I'm gonna throw VG10 into the mix as the second best Spydie steel.

As for the top quality models, all of Spyderco's knives are top shelf. The best folders are the higher end models like the Military and the Starmate.
The Moran is also well worth the money and is made with VG10 steel.
Also check out the Calypso Jr. lightweight in VG10. It's a lockback model and is a real workhorse.
Geez...this is beginning to sound like a commercial.
If it's Spyderco and has VG10 or 440V, get it! You'll be glad you did!

And now, back to our movie...

I'll add my support for VG-10. I haven't tried 440V, and from what I've heard it's wonderful, but this VG-10 stuff is also something to be reckoned with. Good choice, Mr. Glesser!

Yup, misque said it. Both VG10 and CPM440V are just incredible steels. I have both and the only other material I can think of that is better is probably Talonite. Now if Spyderco comes out with a "reasonably" priced folder with a Talonite blade, whew!

I really like the 440v for brute strength, but the VG-10 is the sharpest stuff I've ever been able to maintain an edge on so far. At this time I would have to rank the steels like this for my uses.
1 CPM 440V
2 VG-10
3ATS-55
a. ATS-34
4 Gin-1 (G-2) AUS 8

Depending upon the use #'s 1 and 2 would interchange for me,although I would like to have flat grind 440v to see if I could get an edge as fine as the VG-10 in Calyspo liteweight. I have Spydies in both the ATS 34 and 55, and to be honest I find the geometry of the blade has more to do with the cutting ability than the steel because these steels are so much alike. The Delica 98 in ATS-55 is really hard to beat. When it all boils down I have some really old Spydies and they are all very sharp also.Exotic steels are neat and I really like getting new stuff to mess with every once in a while, but I still would buy a Spyderco more because of the reputation of Spyderco and Sal Glesser than the current hype about any specific steel.
