Best Spyerco under $100?

The title pretty much says it all. I'm considering getting a Spydie (it would be my first). I have a knife handy for those normal, everyday things, opening packages, etc so I don't need the uber-ultimate-weapon-death-ninja knife.

So lay it on me, what do you think is best and mostly, why?

Ah yup- Two votes for the Stainless Police. Just picked one up for $99.00

It wouldn't be such an old yet still produced design if it wasn't a damn good one.

If you're budget were about ten or twenty bucks higher, it would be damn near impossible to pick "the best" though.

Like yourself, I don't as yet own a Spydie, however just ordered a Paramilitary for $98.00 which I should receive next week.
My reasoning for choosing this model over the many available were :
it has G10 scales ( a personal preference over FRN ), flat ground S30V blade, compresion lock ( something a little different ), a good size for EDC, and also what I would consider good looks for a Spyderco.

Good luck, "if at first you don't succeed, buy and buy again!!"

Native II with S30V steel. A real good EDC - I use mine for opening packages, cutting up cardboard, leather work etc. The point is fine but stout. The steel is close to the best in the business.

Military or paramilitary are the best for me
G10 scales and one hand for closing, I feel stainless handles not very secure to use, I had a police stainless and it hurt a little my hand when I use it for cutting hard things

:D My Little Collection :D

I own two dozen (plus) Spydies. Limiting the choices to those currently in production, I'd have to give my vote to the ParaMilitary; personally, I find the Military and the Police models too big for daily use. In a lighter folder, the Calypso Jr. lightweight is a winner (and then you're under $50).

I would say that the Military would be a good choice. You can buy them for $95.00. They are extremely sharp, durable, light weight and a full 4" blade. Plus you get the bonus of the best in modern blade steel: CPMS30V

Tough question.............
You've had some good replies so far. I'm a bit of a Spydie addict and have quite a few including a stainless Police and a Military. I think the Military is one of the best deals out there, especially the newer ones with S30V steel. For myself though I find both these models a little big for everyday carry - great for weekends when I'm shooting or whatever though.
I wear collar, tie etc at work and find I can carry the Native S30V without even noticing it. Great steel, great ergonomics and the smoothest action I've come across on a Spydie make it a good EDC choice for me. That's the model I'd recommend. Haven't handled the Paramiltary yet but I think that would be a great choice too.
The good news is you can't really go wrong with a Spyderco :)

Spyderco makes a lot of excellent knives that sell for under $100, but I'd say there is no single "best" Spyderco for under $100. You have to consider where you'll be carrying, what you'll be cutting, and who's potentially going to be around to see you use the knife. The SS Police and the Military are great knives, but don't forget that when they're out and opened you're standing there with a 9" knife in your hand. That's fine if you're out in the woods, out on a fishing boat, on a construction site... But if you're in a more public area you are likely to make people decidedly uncomfortable. Also, if you're mostly opening mail/packages, cutting string, a 4" blade is way more than you need and can actually be quite awkward. Bigger knives are also less discreet, and in many places illegal.

I'd be willing to bet you don't need a larger blade than 3", and maybe not even that much. The paramilitary is fantastic, I'm never without mine in the woods. But it's large scales and deep blade make it look like a much bigger knife. I'm having a fling with the Dodo right now, it is absolutely the best, but a lot of people thinks its fugly. Everyone raves about the Calypso Jr., I don't have one but it looks like it'd be a great EDC. The jigged bone Kiwi is really nice, good blade shape for everyday utility type stuff, and very people friendly. SS Endura for the "classic" Spyderco look. Navigator and Cricket are smaller still, but again excellent cutters, and you could buy one of each for well under $100. The Herbst is a beautiful knife, and while not in production can be had on e-bay for around $50. If you go straight to the $100 limit, you may very well fly right over the best knife for you.

Anyway, this has gotten away from me. Again, I'd first think about what you need and where you'll be using it. Good luck, and let us know what you decide on.

If you can live without the pocket clip--
I'd say that the Kiwi is great. Maybe I'm a little unusual.
Anyway, nothing wrong with VG-10.

I would recomend the Herbst folder which the Spyderco outlet has/had reduced to $50. I have not checked availablity scince I ordered mine a few months ago.

Ok, I'm going to give you the best cutters out of the $50 and $100 range.

$50: Delica(Thin blade), Endura(larger Delica), Calypso Jr. (Thin blade, fully flat ground)

$100: Military(Thin blade, fully flat ground), Paramilitary(smaller military)

These knives will outcut most other Spyderco's and all other knives on the market.

here is a vote for the Calypso jr. How can you bet VG-10 steel, flat ground for less than $50.00. The synthetic handle also makes it very light and easy to carry. Try one I think you will like it.

I'm gonna go a bit different with my reply and say the Dodo. It's small but wiht a good grippy handle, great blade steel, ball bearing lock and it cuts like a laser.
It also works in to have the smoothest action on any spydie I've owned.

I also can't say anything bad about the cricket for a discreet pocket knife that cuts like crazy.

My 2 cents.

Neko2,
Glad to hear good things about the Dodo as I should be getting mine tomorrow. I have a black serated edge coming. I also have one of the new Calypso jr. coming. :D

Is this Native II the stainless one? Spyderco's website says it's AUS10.

another vote for calypso jr. they won't be around forever, so get two. this is my EDC.

the delica seems a little more robust and is tip up, if that's your bag.

the centofante 3 looks really nice.

all are about $40 from new graham.

the dodo is my most used at the moment (if you don't count the FB temperance, which is my current ktichen knife.
