So I got a friend who decided he wants to start being a knife guy. Really good dude but he is very indescisive and doesn't really know what he wants and is hard to buy for. He has about 100$ but to be safe let's say 75. He wants a one hand opening and closing folding knife with a pocket clip. He is a fairly good sized guy so I would say around 8-9 inches over all would be a good length to be comfortiable.

A big concern he had was he doesn't really know how to sharpen and he wants to e able to keep it sharp with a ceramic rod kit he has, similar to the sharp maker just a off brand that he uses for his kitchen knives. No big brand stuff so I'm sure it's pretty soft just mostly Walmart stuff some thrift store stuff and what not but I do have to say they are pretty sharp with what he does. I'm not sure what kind of steel would be good for him and I'm not sure what to reccomend to him because or 75$ I know he is going to want to feel like he spent his money well and to him 75$ is like buying a Bentley when it comes to knives especially since I think every knife he owns doesn't cost that right now.

Help me help my buddy out guys ?

Really appriciate it guys.

Hmm well you should look at some Kershaw and spyderco knives, maybe benchmade.

Basically let him browse some shapes.

I'd say he should drop $45 for a resilience, then. I can't say there are too many great large knives in that price range, they're all a little over.

I basically am looking to get a list of all the suggestions you guys give and show them to him and see what he likes from there because there is just so much out there I don't even know where to start for him.

Go to kershawguy.com, pick up a Kershaw DLC JYD if he's got any left. Fantatsic ergos, flipping action, very cool looking knife and D2 steel is no slouch by any means.

For the price and size you're talking about, you can't go wrong with a full size benchmade griptilian. The axis lock offers single hand opening and closing.

Everything sounds like Cold Steel folders... They tend to be on the large side. They are very good knives for the money and most of them are around the price range that you set. Aus8 will be easy to touch up as well. It's nothing fancy, but it'll work.

Have him get a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 at about $115, and he will never regret it. The basic knife in S30v is found here in ANIB condition, on the Exchange, very often...

Spyderco Endura, Spyderco Resilience, Benchmade Griptilian, Kershaw Junkyard Dog 2.2, Kershaw Rake.

crkt m16 or m21
kershaw anything
spyderco delica or endura
benchmade grip/mini grip

All good knives that are simple with good looks. I don't think the steel really matters too much but all of these have good steel that will hold an edge and aren't too hard to sharpen. Should be able to find them in his price range.

There are so many great knives available for under $100 that it can be kind of difficult to decide. I would look at the Buck Vantage series of knives or something like a Kershaw Junkyard Dog or Thermite. A blemished ZT 350 can also be had for right under a $100 and is one heck of a knife.

+1 for the kershawguy recommendation as well

Spyderco has a lot of great knives that fit that description. Kershaw also. Spyderco Paramilitary would be perfect.

The direction I went with my first quality knife, Benchmade Griptilian. I only paid $70 delivered for mine and I think they are a little more now but still an excellent knife to start with.

Though I've never purchased from kershawguy, there has never been anything negative said about him, to my knowledge, and his deals are the best for anything Kershaw!

Spyderco Endura comes to mind. Great knife.

There is a version with ZDP-189 which holds an edge insanely well. However, it can be difficult to resharpen if you let it get butter knife dull. You'd really have to neglect the edge for a long time for that to happen, so I'd recommend that steel for someone who doesn't want to deal with aggressive re-sharpening all the time. Cheaper Chinese knives and steels will get dull faster and therefor require more maintenance. All you need to do, to maintain ZDP, is give it a few light swipes on your stones every once in a while and never let it get dull in the first place. A few light strokes on each side will just "touch up" the edge and fold the burr back into place, that is hardly difficult once you get the hang of it.

What will the knife be used for? Just edc at work, around town, and at the house or more heavy duty applications?

Just regular guy stuff. Around the house at work nothing like going into battle or trying to level a forest with it or anything hardcore and abusive.

Then a kershaw for sure. The steel is nothing special but its easy to sharpen and they have tons of styles to chose from. Also flippers are always fun especially as a first knife.
