I've been wanting to make a larger work rest for my grinder and was wondering what the best steel would be to make it out of.

Any thoughts?

I was thinking hardened A2 or something similiar.

I always thought about aluminum, but wondered whether it would gouge and catch the blade.

Micarta ! With thin hardened steel over :p

My first grinder had a ribbed aluminum work table. The ribbing was frustrating for catching, or more like dragging, edges. That was more of a function of the ribbing, but the aluminum is much more of a “sticky” surface than a steel surface, too. Aluminum is too soft IMO to serve well as a working flat surface in a high-abrasive environment like a work rest. I wouldn’t expect it to stay flat in the regular contact areas for very long.

I used a aluminum work rest for my first 8 years on my 2x72, I currently use an aluminum work rest on my disc grinder.
