I’m looking to buy steel here soon and was curious what I blind shops you guys have found the best prices for 1080 in particular. Any help would be appreciated!

If you want cheapest you might try talking with your local machine shops if you have a small one around. Sometimes they will sell you a few bars. Shipping is usually the most expensive part of cheaper steels.:) I don't think there is much of a price difference in 1080, if you do a search the top suggested smaller company that comes up for me is probably going to be your best bet. I don't believe I can link to websites that aren't sight sponsors.

Posting a link to any supplier is OK. Just post te link only with no advertising. Those who are members with sufficient level can post sales info themselves with no violation.

Examples:
A member can post, "ABC Metals has great prices on 1080 steel. and post a link." That is OK. It is not advertising, just a reference for people to use.
ABC Metals can't make a post as a registered member saying they have great prices ... that would be advertising.
USA Knifemakers or Alpha can post that he has 1080 steel on sale this month for $10 a foot. Since he is a seller level member, he has that right.

Second on AKS. My only supplier for steel for some years now.

I completely concur about Kelly Cupples. You probably won't find 1080 cheaper anywhere, and he's a solid guy that gets things done when and how he says he will. Can't ask for much more than that.

Stacy, generally, unless Spark has indicated a different policy for this sub-forum for which I'll apologize in advance if I missed a memo, we allow "mention" of non-supporting vendors...but no live links to such vendors. So you can say "ABC has great prices on this particular product"...but no live link to that vendor.

A live link can be supplied to supporting vendors, either by themselves in their own posts...or by our membership in discussing where to find products.

This is no different than why we do not allow links to Ali Baba or other non-supporting sites in the various discussion groups. This is a perk allowed only for those who support the site.

I hope that makes sense.

I also say alphaknifesupply.com, good prices and I’ve made orders from them and it‘ll arrive in the next day or two.

I didn't see anyone touch on this, the CHEAPEST steel isn't always the least expensive. Buy from reputable dealers, who can and will provide certs on request. Some unscrupulous sellers are just that.

Ah, you mean cheap in quality of steel. Not something that I’ve thought about honestly. Thank you for that. It will be something I keep in mind.

I will add in Pop's since they tend to get missed for steel. I think they have 1080 round stock and they have 8670 and a couple of other forging steels I think. They don't have the best selection but almost always have the best price on most stuff including shipping after the refund.

So, which post is correct-#3 or #8?
This has been an ongoing topic here, to the point that members are making the extra effort to literally call out that they are not alluding to “sales-speech”.
Seems okay for a favored few to discuss vendors up to and including pricing but others are called down for it?
Does a Super-Mod trump a Mod? How about some clarification for those of us actually BUYING a membership so the playing field has the appearance of being level.

From my perspective, #8 is correct.

I pay to advertise on BladeForums. Why should someone who:
1) Does not pay, or
2) Buys a knifemaker membership instead of a supplier membership, or
3) Has someone advertise for them,
Get the benefit of advertising materials or website without paying? What is their motivation to pay for the supplier membership?

I participate when I think I have something of value to contribute. There used to be more suppliers participating here. Why should they participate when they get the benefits of free advertising without putting in the time?

I’m glad this subject is being discussed. I hope the rules can be clearly understood and applied across all of BladeForums including the Exchange.

Chuck
