I have a King Ice Bear 4000 and two strops with a black and green compound. I would like to add a coarser stone to my setup.

What would be the best stone out of my selection?

1)Bester 1000
2) Bester 1200
3) Naniwa Superstone 1000
4) Shapton GS 1000
5) King 1000
6) Sigma Power 1000 (Kind of out of my price range. Only will buy if it is just that much better than the rest).
7) Other: Please Specify

Is the 1000 grit range what I should be looking at?

Try some DMT diamond stones. I use the coarse for reprofiling. I am not sure what grit it is. Then I have the combo brown med. and white fine profile set by Spyderco and then ultra fine Spyderco, and then strop with diamond spray, and then strop with Cr03 powder by japaneseknifesharpening.com I love that diamond spray, the cro3 powder at .3 microns may be too small for some harder steels, but I do it anyways. Have fun.

I would get some DMT stones. You might like an XC and an F. Use XC for severely damaged edges. Use F for putting an edge back on a used knife (getting rid of the "shine"). Those are something like 220 and 600 grit, respectively.

Try the bester 1000, you cant really go wrong and it will be a good step before your 4k. FYI your basically doing this all backwards.

It depends on the type of steel that you will be sharpening. I have the Shapton pro 1000 and like it, but for very hard steels (154cm, Vg-10, etc.), I use the Spyderco medium followed by the fine.

Yeah I know. I should have probably purchased a 1000 grit first but when I purchased the 4000 grit stone, it was intended to compliment my Coarse/fine Duosharp that I unfortunately was out bidded on ebay. Its funny how people pay more money on ebay than they could find it online for.
