I usually sharpen my knives on the bottom of a coffee cup. Works good for my 110's in 420HC.
I picked up a 1972 110 that was pretty dull, I can get most of the blade pretty sharp, but I cannot for the life of me get the last half inch or so sharp at all. I'd like to get a sharpening stone /stones. What do you suggest for the older 425m and 440c?
Thanks in advance

I use a SiC and / or India stone in 2X8" a coarse/ fine combination stone. They can be obtained at a decent price (far better than diamond) and you won't wear it out in your lifetime. Or the next guy. DM

I don't think the ceramic cup removes enough metal to full apex the edge. (working up a burr). It can work for touch ups. It requires coarser grit to create a burr (bring the edge to fully apex). 440C resists metal removal (abrasion) hence it takes a stone and grit with more bite. DM

Thanks. Yes, most of my user knives don't get too dull so they usually just need a touch up and most of my users are 420 HC.
Finally came across a little beat up pre dot 110 that will make a good user, but sharpness wise is about the equal to a butter knife.

For 425 m and 440 c I like diamond hones,I use the course to set the blade edge profile, then the fine to take off the wire edge, then a leather strop and compound to polish the edge.

well.... I learned to sharpen my planer blades on wet dry sand paper on plate glass
they get scary sharp !
soooo,,,, I tried doing my 110 that way and OMG it worked great!!!
I highly recommend it to any one
the wet paper sticks to the glass and you don't have to worry of the
stone getting out of FLAT and it is much cheaper then diamond stones
well for the fine ones
now I found that for course sharpening of the blade the course diamond stones work better ..

What 110 Dave mentions is 100% in my experience. I came to this technique from a bit of a different angle. When I build a computer, I lap the interface between the CPU and heat-sink with wet/dry used wet on a piece of plate glass. The result is a very flat CPU with a mirror finish. You can achieve the same thing with a knife blade.

Congrats jec, if you send your no dot to the spa they will re set the bevel for you.
