Best stripper?

I just bought an Aqua Salt PE. I'm not a fan of blade coatings, so my plan was to strip the blade, but when I tried my trusty Klean-strip it didn't touch the coating. Has anyone stripped one of the new aqua salts, and if you did, what worked?

Thanks.

Jaguars.

Leave the coating, H1 scratches very easily and the coating can help prevent that, Spyderco TiCN coating is good, it's not a paint or the teflon crap Cold Steel used to use.

OP

It is not paint.

titanium carbonitride (TiCN) blade coating.

I'm aware of that, but thank you. What I didn't know until a failed attempt and some google research is that a multipurpose stripper wouldn't work on a TiCN coating. I have found some suggested methods involving hydrogen peroxide, EDTA, nitric acid, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask here on the Spyderco subforum.

I doubt there's any chemical strong enough to eat through the TiCN coating without eating into the steel as well. H-1 may be rust proof under normal conditions, but that doesn't mean it can't be damaged by strong acids and alkalis. I suspect the only way to remove the coating is mechanically, with an abrasive.

Are you near any machine shops that have access to a sand blaster? I agree with deacon, I think you'll need something other than solvents or diluted acids.

I did a little more research, and I'm inclined to agree. I guess a black blade isn't the end of the world. With my luck now that I've tried stripping it and I can't return it, Spyderco will come out with an uncoated blade sometime next week. Thanks all for the input.

How do you like it, I'm considering buying one for fishing and diving trips. Does the edge hold up enough to slice fish and break through fish spines. We tend to catch some big fish that your normal filet knives will not get through thick spines.

I just bought it, so I can't say. I do have a couple of salt folders that have seen a lot of use. In my experience H1 doesn't hold a razor edge very long, but it does stay working sharp. It's plenty tough enough for real work and easy to sharpen. Although I have no experience with the aqua salt, I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't already like H1.

*Opens mouth, closes it*

Not even gonna touch that one, too easy.

The coating on the Aqua isn't paint. You want it off, you're gonna need sandpaper or lapping paste or something else abrasive.

It all depends on your comfort level but sandpaper will do it. If it was a full tang knife with removable scales then it would be much easier.

The name of this thread makes me laugh every time I see it xD
Someone already beat me to the joke though.
