I live in southeastern Kentucky, and I'm eager to learn more about indigenous plants and edibles, along with a few 'survival' or outdoors skills in general, like what local tinder to look for, how and what to snare, etc. What guides do you guys recommend for campfire reading that will help a greenhorn like me?

SE KY: You have Black bear, Whitetail deer, Bobcats, rabbits, squirrels, and lots of rattlesnakes and copperheads. Some claim that there are Mountain Lions. I agree that you should start with the hunting regs. There are some elk west of Middlesboro.

I started out with a good tree and wildflower books to identify trees and plants. Most bloom, so you capture them in wildflower books. There are edible plant books that are geared to the SE US, but they aren't so different as I recall than most any one that covers the Appalachians.

Wildflowers of Tennessee is a good regional reference. Not at home to look up the exact title. The KY wildflower book that is available is fair. It is a bit outdated in terms of "quality" versus information. Have one from 30 years ago when there really weren't that many choices other than Peterson which by the way is a very good book for the Eastern US. They have an edible plant one too.

One of my favorites is "Edible Wild Plants: Wild Foods From Dirt To Plate" by John Kallas.

Gives an in depth knowledge in the identification, prime harvesting, harvesting techniques, and nutrition information. As well as how to prepare wild edilbes in N.America. Highly reccomend.
