Best Survival Vehicle?

Okay here's a good one, this might be fun. What is your favorite survival vehicle? This should probably be broken down into two sections;

1. What you currently have.
2. What you would choose.

I currently own a Ford, "that's not a truck" Explorer. A buddy of mine has a 42' Dodge Powerwagon. Oh, if they still made trucks like that. It's like the SAK of trucks. I'm starting to well up here. Anyhow, I really like the Land Rover Discovery. I've seen the Camel Challenge and I think what those vehicles can accomplish is nothing short of incredible.

A 150 foot yacht with a helicopter, and jet ski, crewed by the Swedish bikini team. Oh yeah, a fishing pole would be nice.

I currently have an '81 toyota corolla. It survives much better than a number of my friends newer and more expensive vehicles, has been stuck in the snow less than my friends' trucks, and doesn't have that confounded contraption that makes vehicles absolutely useless, an automatic clutch.

Ultimate Survival Vehicle? Dogsled. Here anyways. Most other places, I'd vote for a Horse.

Now, what do you mean by a survival vehicle? Is this the one you would most like to be in when it threw a rod at mile 212 of the Dalton Highway (Pause, to look up mile 212 and make sure it's not near a town... Good, it's closer to Barrow than Tanana), or is this the one you'd most like to have when you get caught by a blinding snowstorm 4 miles out of basecamp while on foot after the Dall Sheep that your adrenaline and pounding heart caused you to pull a little and put a nice, clean, barely bleeding wound in?

Don't take me too seriously (Goodness knows I don't) but I don't see the meaning of 'survival' vehicle. I can see 'camping' vehicles, 'off-road' vehicles, and 'mudbogging' vehicles. But I have a hard time imagining a survival situation where the vehicle would make that much difference (Except for how much wire is in it, and how many things you can improvise). If you are talking along the same lines as a so-called 'bugout bag', then we have another situation entirely (And another one I smirk at, unless of course you really are a spook). But if we're talking a bugou vehicle, I'd choose an airplane. Preferably a long range business jet, though I'd take just about anything. Low and slow, and they have to find you visually. I'd also prefer to have an airstrip in my backyard, and live within one tank of gas to a nearby border. And I'd still like the dogsled option...

I have to admit I am kinda partial to my GMC Sierra 2500 4 wheeler. Not only does it take me the places I want to go, but it is nice enough riding for long trips to exciting places.

Or short trips to unexciting places, such as work.

What would I like? A newer one maybe?

I have an 86 Ford 1 Ton Van 4X4 conversion, Detroit soft locker in the rear, posi in the front, NP205 transfer case, US Gear overdrive system, 10 inch lift on 35 inch tires. She's driven by a Ford 460 with a type 2 RV cam and has a 12 ton Warn winch set on a double receiver winch so it operates front or back. Up here folks call me before they call a tow truck if they want to get unstuck or out of a hole.

50 gallons of fuel, full shielding underneath and Kevlar panels on the doors. Sleeping areas, cooking, porta potty and a pop top make it comfortable. Have a 45 watt solar panel on the roof to keep battery number two up to spec.

She's too big on small roads but can claw her way just about anywhere I have clearance. She takes less side to side clearance than a Humvee but more upstairs. I have a 12" bar chainsaw for that problem.

This is the 3rd one I've built and I gotta say that I love those 4X4 vans.

I bet that beast rolls out like a ravenous polar bear. Did I spot it in Karen's CC video? My last road pig was a '77 Suburban Silverado (trailer pullin' spec.) with a stout small block. It love 'Burbs, but that van is superior. Now, my only ride is my first car; 1969 442. Real Steel. Take no plastic, take no ****. Jason

Ron,

That van sounds amazing!

BTW, it wouldn't happen to have a cassette tape deck on it would it?

Hee Hee,

Brian, I'll bet it has an 8-track! LOL.

In all seriousness, I would propose the best vehicle would be one that carries you and your survival gear safely, is adequately maintained, and is driven within its limits according to prevailing conditions. I know that's vague, but when we consider that the best survival tool is the one holding our ears apart, it seems to fit. Even my little pseudo-rally VW fits that bill, even though Ron could run it over and think he hit a big rock.

The rest sort of comes down to whether or not you like blue or red.

On the other hand, I still wouldn't mind a Land Rover (love the Camel Trophy Challenge), Hummer, or a "real" Jeep.

Not in the order of what to use. Depends on scenario.

Ford f-150
BMWGS80
Grumman whaleboat
Dagger Legend canoe
Stumpjumper Mtn.bike

the most dependable vehicles on this list are the canoe and whaleboat. Also the most efficient vahicle EVER designed by man is the canoe.

Cheers,

I have a 99 ford ranger 4X4. I would like to have a sherman tank for a survival situation if not then i think a jeep would work fine.

I always kinda liked the idea of a Harrier jump jet on floats, so you could put it down on a trout pond. Maybe a Warthog with the 20 mm Gatling gun and depleted uranium slugs. Who's going to argue with a setup like that? ("Is there a problem, officer? I thought not...")

'94 Isuzu Rodeo 4x4 fitted with the "works" with a bike rack on the spare carrying a Specialized Mountain bike and as someone previously mentioned...my feet!

Id have to say a Jeep, theres only one. When it comes to 4x4ing you cant get much better, except for a Toyata Land Cruiser or a Defender.Fullsize PU and big suv`s can never go where these little machines go.I use to own 2.I have alot of friends with pickups that use to have to back out of the trails we would run because of there size. Now a full size pickup and a chainsaw....thats a different story.....

Currently I do have a 4x4
Eagle Talon...lol
