Best Tanto Folder for $50??

I have no idea why I like the tanto folders. There is something alluring about them that I don't understand. I am looking for a couple of them in the $50 range and they can't have a blade longer than 3.5 inches.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Are there any good uses for the tanto blade other than to stick someone with? Any tricks to sharpening one with all the angles?
-TIA

The SOG X-42 Mini Auto Clip is just the folder you're looking for:

It's blade length is 2.9 inches long and sportd BG-42 steel. It's hard to beat for the price. You can get the larger version for a few dollars more.

Other options in the $50 and under range include:

Timberline Envoy
Cold Steel Voyager Tanto (medium)
CRKT M-16 (small)
CRKT KISS
Browning Barracuda
Junglee Shogun

Yes. And also read my post regarding the knife in this thread:

Hope it helps.

Edited: Oh regarding sharpening, to me they are actually easier to sharpen then "conventional" curved edge, since for a tanto it's essentially having none but straight edges. For usage, I don't find it partically different from regular blades.. and my suggestion, another good use of a tanto, instead of sticking it to someone, is to stick it to a loaf of bread. :D

The only ones I have in that price range are Cold Steel Voyagers and CRKT M-16s. The Voyagers are sharper and hold an edge longer and the M-16s are more fun to open.

I cast my vote for the CRKT hands down. My uncle bought one for his work, high volume paint and plaster company.

He uses the thing daily and I had the chance to handle it. Showed a little wear but overall a solid little knife.

That SOG mini Autoclip looks awesome and a CRKT knife would be groovy, too. My father-in-law got me an M16z (3" partial serrated) tanto for me and its flipper is awesome and the blade is super sharp.

I have a 4" Cold Steel Voyager. It is very tough when it comes to the stabbing department. (I was able to stab thorugh various steel containers found around that house without damage to the tip.) However, after puchasing it online I realized that it was too large to legally carry in Illinois. I've actually been looking for a buyer...

Go with the Cold Steel Voyager Tanto. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. The locks are really tough as are the blades. AUS-8 is a nice EDC steel and sharpens up really nice.

Remind me never to ask for tantos again. I want all of them! Thanks for all your info. They all fall into what I am looking for and will be hard to settle on just two of them for now. I am leaning towards the M16s and the Junglee.... but then again I do like the Voyager and the SOG and the......... LOL. This is a great forum with a lot of inside knowledge and very helpful to those in need to spend money.

Thanks again.

molinee,

I've carried a CRKT M16-12M for past two years (birthday present from family!)...been a great knife!! But I decided to upgrade to lil beefier knife...got a CRKT Lightfoot M1 today (birthday present from familey...again!) :D

Seems to be a great knife! Not necessarily the traditional tanto you might be looking for...but it's modified profile may interest you? That was something I had been looking for myself...you might want to take a look at it and see what you think!

Good luck in your search!
