Making a bird trout knife for a buddy and havent done one before. What thickness do you guys prefer for such jobs? I figured I didnt want fillet thin but know to thick will be no good. I was also wondering if you guys thought cpm D2 was corrosion resistant enough, the guy does take care of his knives. Thanks for any input.

I have no experience with CPM D2, but have made a lot of D2 knives in the bird/trout range. I like 3/32 best, but certainly no thicker than 1/8 for this type of knife.

I've made a few for myself, keep trying to find the perfect design, and am settling in a one I find very useful. The thickness of it is 1/16th, and that seems more than adequate for small game/ trout etc. I came to this conclusion after thinking of all the critters I cleaned with a 4" Rapala filet knife and numerous slipjoint folders. They always worked great, and are thin and pointy.

I make these out fo 1/8" thick stock and it seems to work pretty well.

Are you sure it's CPM D2????

I got the following email from my Crucible Rep.

We make CPM D2 only as a special mill order. We have done that for years but it’s usually a 2000 lb minimum. Plus there is no real advantage to CPM D2 and significantly more expensive.

Can you post a few pics of your 1/16 bird and trout design? We'd love to see it!

Wow! Jessica and Chuck aren't going to like this at all. I've been emailing with them for a few days, and he's been telling me how good this CPM D2 is going to be! If they get it from Crucible, I'd sure be making a phone call to them if I was Chuck. I was getting set to buy a little, but I HATE controversial knife steels. So I'll stick with 52100, nothing at all controversial about it:D

Alpha knife supply has CPM D2 for sale now. This is not the same as crucible D2 although made by the same company (my understanding). I was told by crucible about a month ago that cpm D2 was not available just yet but should be soon, so it makes sense it is hitting the market now. Not shure about preformance gains, I will have to let you know. If they are selling something other than cpm D2 that would be a problem but I doubt that is the case.

3/32" is hard to beat once you get used to how well it slices!!
I'd say, if the blade is over 4" use 1/8"........but 3/32" is my EDC thickness.
