Hey guy, I was wondering what the best type of belt is for a belt grinder for grinding things like g10 and Micarta. I'm putting handles on blanks so I need a good belt for that. I'm buying my first one, it's a 1x42 inch grinder. For example aluminum oxide (I think it's called).
Can anyone tell me the best type of belt for this?

Thanks guys,

Bo

The aluminum oxide belts you mention are about the best belt for the money for grinding the material you referred to. For metal and profiling and beveling - there are other options such as ceramic. For the 1X42 grinder you're referring to, I'd think the AO would be just fine. Perhaps other folks can comment on that.

Okay thanks guys. I will buy the AO and see how that works out for me.

Thanks,

Bo
I prefer Hermes & VSM O/A belts .. Hermes are top quality & VSM are a real value..Try a few belts and you’ll find the one that works best for how you grind/sand.. Pressure & Speed!

I use http://www.popsknifesupplies.com . They have great service and great prices heck they even seem like nice people when I talk to them. Sometimes they have some extras that are not on the site if you ask.Tru Grit is another main one with a massive selection that I will use in the future but can't personally recommend.

Great, thanks guys. I'll try tru-grit.com first since I'm in Canada.

What's a good belt for cutting stainless and carbon steels? Or are they different belts. Any ideas?

Thanks again,

Bo

The best abrasive for rapid material removal is Ceramic Belts the 40-50-60 grit. For profiling and bevel grinding Ceramic makes short work of the process they run cooler than Aluminum Oxide and keep your fingers out of the way. Ceramic is more expensive but they last longer than A/O. Grit size is also a factor not just abrasive material.

Right on, thanks busto!

Also there is a belt grit progression that I find really is rock solid for grinding steel. Woods & handle materials not as important .. you want to double the grits! I buy & grind my Pre HTed blades with the VSM Ceramic belts in the following grits..36G 60G 120G And then go to my Scrotchbrite & Cork belts to finish my blades .. Handles , A/O I’ll use 40G 120G 220G 400G belts..
