I enjoy bushcraft and I am looking to upgrade my hatchet. I don't know which would be best for bushcraft, and I don't have an opinion on hammer polls at this time. Give me some reccommendations and personal experiences to help a fellow Axeman (if you will) decide. I also would like to know what would be the best wood to use for a handle. I live in CT and the only trees around are maple and oak, as well as some hemlock. If none of these are good, how about buying them online or another option? Thanks for helping.

Hickory or ash are common wood for handles . Hickory seems to be the number 1 choice. Try House Handle . com

A classic broad hatchet is a nice bushcraft tool. I go back and forth between my classic True Temper and my modern Stubai broad hatchet. Both are heavier than a standard hunting/camping hatchet and pack a nice punch. But for detailed work I'll go back to the standard camp hatchet. An old Plumb boy scout style hatchet will do well, too. And I should mention - this is all for work at the stump.

If you want your bushcrafting hatchet to also double as a feller/chopper then you need to step up to either a boy's axe (my favorite) or a Hudson Bay style axe.
