If you have a BOB (Bug Out Bag) or are thinking of assembling one, what are some of the knives and miscellaneous tools that you recommend? Let's concentrate on high value knives and tools as, let's face it, they will either be stored in the trunk of your car or closet. Theft or damage are a consideration.

My recommendations based on previous ownership experience.

Bk Companion, Bk7, and Bk9 from Ka Bar (I owned a Bk7 by Camillus).

In my small BOB I have a
-Mora knife (red plastic handle, no guard)
-Victorinox Swisstool spirit

and that is it for cutting tools. I usually carry a folding knife and recently bought a keychain SAK. I no longer consider large knives for serious work. They take up too much space, weigh too much, and are uncomfortable to carry for many hours. (and I dont live in a jungle)

For a car kit, I think it is unnecessary to have a large chopping knife/hatchet/large saw. You will not need to build a shelter (you are in a car after all) and if you need to build a fire you can gather up wood or break off branches or, as last resort, baton with the mora.

At home I have a Gransfors Bruks Wilderness hatchet and plan to pick up some kind of folding camp saw, such as a sven saw or one of the silky pocket saws. Maybe not the best value, but the GB hatchet does its job well.

I also recommend a sharpening stone (like a DMT folding coarse/fine sharpener). Cheap, durable, takes little space, and easy to use.

I have a Scapper6 attached to my BOB at the moment. It's in a nylon sheath with a LM Super tool in the pouch. Giving that a try for a while.

Funny that you would mention BOB as being the place for a budget knife. i actually have nicer stuff in my BOB than i use in any other thing. my reasoning is that if i am indeed bailing out im probably gonna need the best equipment i can get :)

My bob has an estwing hatchet and 2 busses ( a HR and a Skinny ASH) and a RAT RC-4 i figure im not gonna be alone and need a knife for my traveling companion.

i carry it all in a TT 3 day plus pack in multicam i have a BLackhawk riggers belt with the busse hell razor sitting on top of the bag ready to go.

The wave on the other hand is probably the best tool in my BOB

It is not a BOB, but I do keep my hiking/survival setup in my car. You just never know when you might find find a nice spot for a hike.:D

The knife is a Hiker from JK Handmade Knives.

Plus I always have a SAK and a smaller fixed blade on me.

Todd may i suggest replaceing that GI issue 1 quart with a nalgene brand canteen theyre cheap and wont leach toxins in your drinking water even if you store water in them for a long period of time. plus they dont taste like a a$$hole. plus it has nearly the same dimensions and it lets you look at how much water you have left. http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/store/detail.aspx?ID=1264

I keep a Becker Tac-Tool and a Leatherman Surge in my car pack. I also have a SwissChampion in the first-aid kit in the bag.

Theft and/or loss are considerations which lead me to choose more value oriented pieces for my BoB. I think my suggestions are more than able to handle whatever may be thrown at them. I think we'd be more careful using these tools rather than abusing them if it really came down to a situation where a "tomorrow" would be difficult to predict.

I use a regular backpack (although, more heavyduty than average) for my gear.

A hatchet in the car? My reasons for it are: 1) In case your car becomes immobile (stuck in snow, a fallen tree on the road, etc.) 2) Gurney
