I'm getting back into hawks after many years and have come here to the mountain for the word. I'd like to be able to use it for light camp work, have a sheath available to wear it and depend on it to be a real good (great) thrower.

And oh yeah be a very reasonable price. I've Googled so many it's now just a confusing mess. I am calling on the expert opinions here so I can buy it once. OK maybe twice or 3 times. I'm like that with blades and such. Help me impress the guys at camp this year.

Thanks y'all.

A good starter is the cold steel trailhawk. They are commonly found for less than $30 and you can customize them to your hearts content. They also make an excellent thrower.

You can see the sheath I made for my trailhawk in this link.

Of course there are plenty of tallented makers here on the board, they offer superior products for very reasonable prices. And hey, who doesn't like to support our forum members.

I have a trail hawk too and like it but I haven't gotten out to throw it yet. I've heard some guys like the norse hawk too for the same price. If you want to spend a little more, Coal Creek Forge makes some really nice ones for about $70. You have to email him though he doesn't have a website.

I have a rifleman hawk from cold steel that I have thrown thousands and thousands of times at least. I have been throwing mine for 9 years or so.

They don't come with a sheath, so you will have to make one, or find one. They are reasonably priced. I think I paid $27 for mine.

about a 30 foot throw

this throw is past the 50 foot mark.

Do you always sacrifice throwing ability with a hammer poll type? To what extent does it ruin the balance and add too much weight for the best throw?

Thank you. That is great information and right in my budget. I like the trapper's hawk and the big American. What a good deal!

Do you have an opinion on the Cabela's throwing hawk? I really like their sheath for it too. Cabela's is usually outstanding quality.
Again thanks for indulging a brand new rookie hawk-throwing wannabe poser.

I can't figure out if this forum costs me or saves me money.

It will cost you money...For sure...But its fun....
Heh...true. You should just do like me and start buying one of each and decide for yourself.;)

BTW, for my money, Fort Turner is it. I have an Iroquois hawk and it is and exceptional piece, especially for the money.
