Best Way To Anneal A File

The way I anneal a file is in my paragon oven. At 1000 degrees per hr. I raise the the temp. to 1550. Cut off oven after 15min. Leave files in oven untill it cools off to 1000 degrees. Then take files out of oven and cool to room temp and they should be soft as butter. Works for me. Hope this helps. There are other ways but this is how I do It. Mike

Easy home method
1. get some fireplace ash, or vermiculite (from a garden centre)
2. get an ovenproof pan large enough to hold the file(aluminum roasting pan)
3.fill pan 3/4 with #1 and put in oven at 400 deg. for 1 hour
4. with a propane plumbers torch, heat the file to cherry red
5. quickly bury file in pan, turn off oven and leave for 12 hours or so
6 file should then be easy to cut with hacksaw ,file.and sandpaper
AND NOW THE REAL FUN BEGINS---GOOD LUCK

When I want to anneal a pick of steel I do something like WlsonKnives said. But I put the steel in my over and set it to come up to 1500 degrees slow, I leave it there for 30 min. Then I remove it from there and let it cool down slow. And like he said it is soft as butter. Check out my shop Blademaster000 when you can, and Merry Christmas and New Year.

Typical anneal is 100F above the critical and cool in ashes. A subcritical anneal [easy in a wood stove] heat below critical , ~1200 F for 1-2 hours ,air cool. The subcritical anneal should get you a finer spheroidized structure.
