Best way to break your knife?

Hi,

I know the subject sounds shocking, but i have read in some past threads, where there were incidents when people were searched by the police and tried to cofiscate their knife, and the owner ended up breaking the knife before handing it to them, so that they (the police)can't keep it for themself.

I was wondering, what would be the best and easiest way to do this withoug hurting yourself..

also, is there any chance of them charging me for breaking it, eg, tampering with evidence, or something like that?

thanks.

I once got 1/2" of a worn kitchen knife to snap off by inserting it in a crack in the sidewalk and leaning on it with my full weight (then 225 lbs). I'm not sure this would work on a more substantial blade though.

What's the best way to break your knife?
Easy, try to use it as a screwdriver.:D

I'm not to sure breaking your knife to keep a cop away from it is such a good idea. Hopefully someone more knowledgable in matters of law will step in and enlighten us.

If I had a knife that was so cheaply made that I could break it befor handing it over to anyone I don't think I would worry about it.

Anyone that wanted it could have it.

I sure wouldn't break MY knife, since there'd be a GOOD chance that I'd get it handed back to me.:).

Lets see if we have the sequence of events straight.

1. A cop stops you and puts you in a position where you suspect he will ask for your knife.

2. You pull out your knife and open it

3. The cop thinks you are pulling a weapon and shoots you.

It just doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

I think trying to break the knife would just be dangerous and a waste of time. If the cop is wanting the knife then you should probably just give it up as is instead of trying to 'modify' it first.

If breaking it is really what you want to do though...breaking off the tip might be the easiest...(and even that won't be too easy either)

Dropping it on its tip works for me. I have tipped at least three of my knives by accidentally dropping them.

And I agree pulling a knife and opening to break it is not the best idea.

While I agree that pulling a kinfe unexpectedly is a great way to get shot, I do have a suggestion on how to break a knife.

I would imagine that a linerlock could be screwed up rather easily by inserting a screwdriver (micra?) or coin between the scale and the locking liner while the blade is open. Twist. If you can even slightly bend or misalign the liner the knife should be a lot more useless.

A similar approach might worlk well on frame locks. Open the knife, and then shove the lock out of the way as if ou were unlocking it, but keep pushing until it is a good 2 or 3 inches outside the knife. You now have a friction folder. I'm not sure it would work with a Sebenza, but I would think that lesser frame locks would be ruined. My friend damaged his Vapor by accident by pushing the lock bar too far out of the way.

sorry, who's Cliff Stamp? I've never heard of him.
Me either. Can someone enlighten me? ;)

As for breaking a knife, I have a demised SEAL Knife 2000 in my desk drawer that was was dropped about 200 feet straight down while rock climbing.

So lets see now...while a LEO stands there waiting for you to hand over your knife you're going to ask him to wait a second while 1) you climb the nearest 200 ft cliff so you can drop it 2) you search for a screwdriver, open your knife then insert the screwdriver beween the locking liner and the blade 3) taking your knife, opening it, inserting it in a crack in the sidewalk and then putting your weight behind it (might as well ask the officer to do it as he has nothing else to do while waiting for you to break your knife) to break it. The only way I can see this happening is if the officer is standing there in amazement trying to figure out why an idiot would be breaking his knife. And even that is extremely unlikely.

Being a Police Officer I would have to say that someone pulling a knife out becomes a problem, then if that person should make it to the point where they were breaking the knife or trying to before giving it over, I would probly LMAO at them and let them keep trying, and when they finally succeded I would say " oh never Mind have a nice day". But in all honesty I wouldnt be taking someones knife away from them unless I really felt I was in danger from it and them in the 1st place, or they had been arrested and I was searching them, and at this point you take everything from them inventory it and turn it into the jail to be returned to them when they "check" out, or if it was something used in commission of a crime it would be inventoried as evidence and put up untill thier court date, then it's up to the Judge to decide what is done with evidence, he will return it to them or order it destroyed, if a destruction order is issued on it my dept. takes these things down to the local scrap metal place and we run it through those large teeth/jaws they have and it comes out looking like confetti we take a pic have the person working the machine sign the destruction order and alls done with it.

Never seen any Police Officer I have ever worked with in 13 years take something from someone with the intention of keeping it for them selves, most Officers are good honest people, but of course there are the few that aint worth a ****, but I figure you chance of actually running into one of them is about them same chance of you getting hit by a bus, Unless your just someone who chances the wrong places alllot or gets into things you know better then to. the average person generaly will never deal with a Police Officer in a official manner, thats the pure and simple stats.

I haven't heard of this, but there was that one guy I knew who carried a Strider Fixed Blade (can't quite remember the model) One day he's using it to carve his girl's name into a tree when a passing LEO drew his weapon and shouted "You, with the Strider, break it now or I'll shoot...!"

I miss that guy...
