I bought a Gerber EZ-out folder about a month ago and now I need to give it a good cleaning. Is using carb cleaner the only way to gets all the dirt and lint buildup out of it or is there a better way??

Thanks
Robert

I just use some hot water and dish soap with an old tooth brush. Then compressed air to blow it out before applying some lube.:)

if possible, pull it apart and go over with soap and warm water

just be careful about not losing all the fiddly bits (screws, springs, whatever)

I would take it apart but I am reluctant to remove the pins holding the knife together. Will try the hot soapy water though, what type of lube are you guys using after the blade has been cleaned and dryed??

i use vaseline to lube the pivot, area where the blade comes into contact with the handle

i take apart my 940 occasionally. nearly lost the stop pin down the drain.

but if you cant take it apart without breaking stuff, you could put it through the dishwasher..............then just give it a lot of time to dry, blow dry with a hair dryer or something. havnt put any of my knives through the dishwasher, but i hear it works well

Bike shops have some great lube that is desighned to not pick up too much gunk. I use the same lube on my folders as I use on my bicycle chain. Tri Flow - It's silicone based.

Just run really hot water over it and it will dry very quickly and let it air dry for awhile, then lube as needed...;)

Carb cleaner or disc brake cleaner does a fine job and since it has such a high rate of evaporation its gone about as fast as you spray. I've used disc brake cleaner to clean out otf's and then some compressed air just to be sure, then a drop or two of Rem Oil and all is well. Of course hot soapy water works fine too. Follow that with a minute or two under a handheld hair dryer then oil and you should be good to go. Keep in mind that when hot everything will expand slightly and the action may feel stiff even though you have oiled it. Just wait for it to cool off and then you should really be able to tell the difference.

I use the soapy water methode, then wipe and air dry and oil. At work I use comp air to blow out water and I've sprayed WD40 and then blown it out before oiling.(WD dispells the water). My wife says the canned air she uses on her computer would work well on knives also.

I've had good luck using a water pic to blow the crude out. Move the blade into different positions as you pic and it does a good job. Then use the hair dryer and add some Tuff-Glide while warm and let it dry and you're good to go.:D
