I got an amber bone GEC toenail for Christmas, and it's an exquisite knife save one problem. The pen blade is so tight as to almost be unusable. Nailbreaker to open, takes a whole hand pressing to close, and stops dead at about 10 degrees shy of closed unless I push it the rest.

I've cleaned and oiled it, and I see some small fibers sticking out from the spring. I can't get them to flush out, though.

I'm thinking some delicate work with a vise to loosen the pivot might solve both problems. I've done it before on a number of knives, but I was wondering if there was a way I don't see.

Send it to GEC.

If GEC had enough knives sent back to them, they may wise up and correct the problem of hard openings.

Well, oil, cleaning and some delicate work with Vise Grips, and all I have to show are a few light dings on the ricasso. No change. I've emailed GEC as well as knifeswapper, since his shop is where it came from.

I have a GEC toenail that was the same. In trying to oil it up and cycle it open and closed, I ended up cutting about a quarter through the tip of my finger. Sent it to GEC to fix and it came back perfect. My advice: don't lose a fingertip trying to fix it.

However, if you really want to make a final try at home, I have had jewelers polish recommended to smooth out a joint, so long as you flush it all out with oil after you've reached your desired level of polish. Let us know how things work out.

Good advice, never manipulate a knife if you might want warranty's to still apply afterwards. Shoot it to GEC and they can still probably take care of it. Your word is good as gold, but it would amaze you how many people do more damage than good then want the factory to fix their hack jobs. Dealers can take back knives that are as they were when they left the store, but cannot be expected to take one back that has been dinged up - just nowhere for them to go with it. Scars turn a new knife into an edc at best; and that is a good little hickey on the price tag.

Sounds like something may have gotten jammed in there from the factory? I'd let GEC take care of that.
