Best way to fix split wood pin handle?

I drilled a hole through my wooden handle for a mosaic pin. I completely forgot to brace the back end of the wood and ended up with some splitting around one end of the hole. I could pack in some plastic wood putty. Anyone have any better ideas for a fix?

Here's the damage:
Spoiler alert.. it's a pistol stock (so leveling the whole thing down is not really an option).

Carefully drill it out larger and put in a dowel of some contrasting wood say ebony and then drill that out to accept the Mosaic pin
This is brilliant, thanks! Offsetting the wood like that will look even better. I might just have to tell people I did it on purpose. Thanks again!

Based on the amount of lost material. That drill hole is going to be large and hit the end of the current carved area

I would suggest to continue the carving design around the damaged area to remove the splits
