I was wondering if anyone has a GREAT suggestions on how to get a mirror finsih on 303 stainless. It takes a loooong time at the ol' buffer.

Any suggestions to help will be greatly appreciated.

Unless you have a huge supply of 303, I'd recommend going to 416 stainless steel. I have never had a problem getting a good finish on it.

RCC are you using a polishing compound designed for stainless steel? There are compounds designed for each metal or metal combination and using a compound designed for brass on stainless usually will not work.

For stainless steel look for a stainless steel cut and colour compound, these are usually green in colour.

Sand the metal to about 240 grit before starting buffing and be prepared to touch up scratches with 400 grit paper if they appear.

Use a circular sewn wheel with about 1/2" spacing between rows of stitches, loose unsewn wheels are dangerous so avoid them at all costs.

Gents...

Thanks for the tips. Great help they will be.

Yes, I am getting the surface as smooth by sand paper up to about 600 grit, the buffing the Jackson Rouges first the dark grey then the 50% green chrome.

I also use a 3600 rpm Baldor(r) 333B. Nothing small by any means

But I just wanted to know if there is a quicker way.

I am going to give the 416 a shot, it is not that much more expensive. Plus if I can cut down on my time a lot, that will save a lot of costs there.

Well I will keep you posted on the results. Let me know if any more suggestions come to mind.
