Hello all,

New to this forum, so thanks for answering my questions in advance.

I've been a knife collector here for a little while now, and although I've known to keep them sharp, I'm not too familiar with keeping them clean/rust free.

Obviously, rust is almost inevitable but, now that I'm buying more knives I want to maintain them better.

What are some ways to keep a knife clean/rust free. What type of oil should I buy?

Any help would be great!

Well for stainless steel knives you shouldn't have to worry too much. Just keep them clean and dry. Clean them just like you would a kitchen knife or any other knife: soap and water. That's how I do it anyway. Just make sure to dry them after. For carbon steel you should keep the blade oiled. You can use just about anything. Mineral oil, cooking oil, olive oil, gun oil, WD-40, just nothing too thick. If you're planning on using the knife to cut food, I'd recommend mineral oil, since it's non-toxic and flavorless. You could also use cooking oil, but it may add the slightest bit of flavor (you probably won't even notice it though). Oils such as WD-40 and the like can be toxic however (and nasty tasting), so I wouldn't recommend it if you're going to touch any food with the knife. Just keep your knives dry and they shouldn't rust on you.

Here's a thread which compares the rust preventive-ness of numerous oils and lubricants.

I used to use mineral oil, but after seeing this I switched to Froglube. While it didn't test the best, it was in the top for rust protection. And it is totally food safe and bio degradeable. If food safe isn't a concern, Eezox or Breakfree CLP are probably your best bet.
