best way to remove coating?

The coating on my BK7 is badly scratched and worn off in a lot of places as a result of regrinding and all around hard use by its previous owner. So, I want to remove the rest of the coating and give it as nice a satin finish as I can using only hand tools. Anyone have a good idea on how to remove the coating and satin the blade? I'm thinking 400-600 grit sandpaper and maybe steel wool, but I'm no expert. Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion Gadget. Only two problems: 1) I'm nowhere near what I'd consider a reputable body shop (middle of NYC) and 2) my intention was for this to be the first step in a do-it-yourself project. Is there anyway to get a nice finish by hand?

I suppose the opposite of bead blasting would be to stab it in and out of and beat it against a bucket of sand:D

Actually I'm not sure what steel the BK&T's are and if they would do well with out a coating. I'm sure someone will correct me but I thought they would be pretty prone to rust and that is why they are coated.

CSP20108,

My guess would be to use ordinary paint stripper compound to get the coating off the blade. Paint stripper is available at any home center or decent hardware store.

The fact that the Becker scales are so easily removed simply makes the blade that much easier to strip. After removing the scales, you don't have to mask (or be careful of) the handle to avoid getting corrosive chemicals on the scales.

NOTE: I haven't personally stripped off a BK&T knife's coating. My guess is extrapolated from two facts:
1. Ordinary paint stripper has been used by others to strip Busse blades of their coating. Those who did this reported that ordinary paint stripper worked efficiently doing the job. A search of the Busse forum here on BFC or at http://www.bussecombat.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=1 should get you more specific info on their projects doing this.
2. My experience with BK&T vs Busse coatings is that the Busse crinkle coating is harder (more ceramic-like brittle) than the BK&T coating which seems softer & more elastically plasticene. This difference in physical properties makes me suspect that the BK&T coating would be at least as susceptible to the stripper as the Busse coating, if not more so.

My $0.02 and worth what you paid for it. ;)

Thanks everyone for the advice! I'm going to try the paint stripping method and post the results here when I'm done.
