Best way to remove factory finish from brass and copper handles

As the title states, I'm wondering about stripping factory finish from brass and copper scales. Those Civivi "black rubbed" copper and brass scales have some attractive blades attached, but I'd rather start with a bare scale and build the patina over time. Really the fun of having such a heavy scale material. What would be the best non-damaging/safe means to strip the black. I'm assuming it is some sort of lacquer? Thanks for any help.

I have no idea what they use for their blackwash finish. I'd try some fine steel wool first, like 000 or 0000. That stuff is harder than copper and brass, but not a lot harder, so it'll be relatively gentle. If that doesn't work, it's probably something like a pvd oxide coating, which will require some sandpaper to take off. In that case, I'd wrap some 400 grit or similar sandpaper around my finger and go at it carefully.

Worst case, I'd try this on a Civivi that you know there are good aftermarket scales available for, like an Elementum.
