Best way to remove fingerprints from brass?

Brasso is good for polishing household items. It will gum up a folding knife and is too coarse for a really good shine. Flitz or Simichrome work much better and shine prettier. A tube will last you a LONG time.

I dont know if they sell it in the U.S., but Brasso silverpolish works great
in this case. It's finer than the regular Brasso. Another good product is
Hagerty. It's made for table silver, very smooth.

A pencil eraser is too gritty to use on bright polished brass. It will scratch it. Erasers work very well on satin finished metals.

Cooks Illustrated tested several brass/copper polishes, and reported that all of them took tarnish off copper pans, but only one was able to put a factory-like polish back onto the pan: Weiman's Copper polish. I've been through Brasso and all the other copper polishes, but Weiman's is the only stuff that does more than remove tarnish.

The stuff is great on my copper pans. I've never tried it on brass, but I expect it would be equally stellar. Test on a small area first.

Could be true, but if you follow up with mothers chrome polish you wont be able to tell. at least this works for me. the erasers i use are the soft kind from mechanical pencils. hope this helps.

Another common item used for shining brass in the military is Never Dull. Comes in a can and looks like some cotton wadding with some chemical on them. When you start wiping it will start to look dark and likely turn black, take a clean cloth and wipe down and it should come out clean and shiny.

Just to clarify, it's called Nevr Dull (yeah, no 'e'), and it comes in a blue can with a red and white "label"
