i've tried WD-40....and i got a lot of rust off of a knife. though there is still some left on knife...so what would be the next step in removing this? there is some kind of # on one of the blades of the knife some i'm shying away from grinding it with anything. so is there another kind of solvent i can use to remove the rust?

I've used Fitz with a lot of succes. It's a polishing paste, not too aggresive. Just put some elbow grease to it. :) Won't hurt the knife unless it's a fancy safe queen.

Might be a bit of work then. I did some work on a great-uncles I was given. Should be OK unless it's heavity pitted.

alright sounds good again....

any suggestions for the joints of the knife? because it isn't a fixed blade

You can try scraping heavy rust with brass or copper, then using WD 40 and 0000 steel wool again. It may take several tries. This is what I do on the high dollar restorations that I undertake.

Lemon juice or vinigar will take off all the rust very quickly, as a low cost option but rince it off very quickly, Gud4u idea is probably better for a quality knife.
