What is the best way to remove scale from 154CM bar stock? I have cut out my blanks and profiled them but I would like to remove the scale before doing my layout for the grind lines.

I know its been mentioned before, but my internet access is down to work and my blackberry till after I move back to Ontario, so using the search function is a real pain at the moment till I get the hang of browsing with a BB:o

Another +1 for soaking in vinegar. Cheap, easy and effective.

I was working with Anvilring yesterday and we used muratic acid. It did the job quickly and I was very shocked at how well it worked. Just don't inhale the stuff.

I tried the over night in vinegar and it made no difference so I just hit it to the grinder. It looks like there was no scale on it after all and what I was seeing was just the imperfections in the surface of the steel. I will be grinding the bevels this afternoon.

Straight acid?

I have like 3 gallons of the stuff and knew i could use it for something someday!

I'm sure stronger acids will work much faster. For goodness sakes wear safety gear and have plenty ventilation!

I supsct you are right that the surface finish is not scale, but texture. Crucible uses sandblasting to remove their mill scale. There shouldn't be any left. The steels are generally about .020 oversize to allow for surface cleanup.

Rob!

You are correct, not that I doubted you, but I looked at it under 10X magnification. If there was scale I should have been able to see it along the edges of the blank. I didn't see anything.
