Since it the tweeners are comeing out after the Machax my focus has now changed. I have never sharpened a blade shape like that. Any advise? Any sharpening system work best for blades like this?

Lets get these questions answered before the Machax is in my hand.

On something that large, I would think that a benchstone would work fine, its what I'm planning on using on mine. Just have to keep changing the position of the knife to make sure the edge stays in contact with the stone.

Or a belt grinder, like E's got, you could Fisk the hell outta it.

Oooooo a fisked machax. Damn. It won't be that hard to sharpen since the recurve is big. I've been having a hell if a time getting the small recurve on my zt0350 sharpened without rods but I've owned choppers with large recurve areas and did them just fine on a stone.

Maybe I can send it to clich for some Fiskin...

Depending when I can snag my own, you may have to wait to get it back :D. Trades does some awesome fisking from what I hear around town. Id want to Fisk mine first before I do someone else's. Just to be sure I still got the touch. Ya know the touch that I learned from watching an internet video two months ago :D

I sharpened mine on my belt sander and it is glorious. I tested the shavability on my arm and lost some skin... I love my Machax!!

We should totally add a glossary to one of the stickies: though I'm a huge fan of it, I'm sure terms like "fisking" or "don't get stuck in a goat" might be lost on some

Also, I"d think a small ceramic rod should be quite adequate, they cut surprisingly fast as far as abrasiveness vs. apparent grit goes.

@jarodmichael: That thing sounds hungry, be sure to offer that thing up some wood soon, or I'll fear for your life

P.S. have fun fisking your recurves, folks.

I understand. Just sorta throwing that out there.

Trade does do awesome work. My knives look boring in comparison.

Ok I'll ask. What is fisking and who is Trade?
Also, where does the line form to get a machax / who do I have to butter up to? :D

A Spyderco Sharpmaker will handle the Machax's curves easily enough.

paper wheels will work too and give you a freaky sharp edge. you can even convex the edge on a belt sander and finish the edge off on the slotted wheel.

Jerry Fisk and i'm pretty sure tradewater.
Mr. Fisk is a living knife legend you can find knife sharpening videos online. look into the recent beckerhead gathering.
and Mr. Tradewater will often sharpen his left arm on a belt sander to keep sharp his pimp hand.

I used a diamond honing rod and a strop(green compound) to clean the burr. Though I just had to maintain the edge. Don't think it was really used before me.

the worksharp convex belt thingy seemed to work fine on mine. as it IS a chopper, convexing seems a good thing, and for what it is, the tool does a good job.

80, 220, and 6000 grit out of the box, and i think there's an intermediate grit. 220 should do just dandy for most chores.

the original hard chrome models i have are essentially convexed. very smooth and lubricious. they chop well for their weight.

i think you'll find the new thinner model takes a potentially finer edge resulting in a better slicer as well.

going to have to comparison test of course. i think the new model will require some adjustments, esp in wrist snap.

i personally favor something with a touch more mass. that's me though.
