Hi folks,

I bought a couple of, what I thought was expensive, axis and sambar antler rounds, and am asking what is the best method for grinding/shaping/buffing this stuff. I've heard you don't want to get this material too hot but that's about all I know, as I've never worked with this stuff.

Thanks and best regards,

Take it slow and easy when grinding, hand sand to 600-800 grit and leave for a satin look,or lightly buff (same as grinding...slow and easy) with pink no scratch compound to get a shiny handle.

dont forget to wear eye and resperator protection this stuff stinks and burns in the eye if contacted

for the help. A couple of additional questions, if you don't mind.
I've got a triple shive/pulley system (no variable speed) setup on my grinder. At it's slowest speed it's running something like 800f/m. Is this slow enough?

Also, will a white buffing compound work in lieu of the pink, no scratch?

Thanks again guys,

Dana,

I use an old worn out 80grit on the belt grinder to rough out the antler shape. From there it's hand sanding with 120, 220, 320, 400 and finish with 600. The no scratch pink puts a really nice high sheen finish on the antler. Only question about using the white compounds is they tend to cut, which increases the heat factor and could put a dark spot on the finish. For sure use the eye protection and good respirator, even when hand sanding. Antler dust can cause really serious problems in the lungs.

I'll go buy some pick no-scratch and give your suggestions a try. I'd hate to ruin
an expensive piece of sambar or axis deer round.

Speaking Of Deer Ive Been In The Woods Latley Squirl Hunting And Decided To Follow Some Hawks That Kept Skwaking At Something. I Couldnt Figure Out What They Were Making Such A Fuss About Thats Why I Followed And Low And Behold They Lead Me To 6 Deer. I Didnt Shoot Any Cus Its Not Season But Gosh I Hope Those 2 Are Around When It Comes Time I Got About 60 Yards From The Deer And Tracked Them For Awhile. The Next Day I Kept Hearing Some Crows So I Went To Them And Just When I Could See Them They Flew Off But I Got To Bag Some Squirl Where They Were. I Know This Sound Superfishal But My Buddy Was Hunting With Me And He Followed Through The Whole Thing And Was Awwed That The Birds Lead Us To Prey.
