What do you consider the best wilderness navigation book(s)(non-GPS)?

I generally use a baseplate type compass, not lensatic or military styles. (Note: Please start a separate thread on those types if interested so we can stay on topic.)

This is a subject I never grow tired of and would be interested in adding to my library.

Here are the ones I own:

1. Finding Your Way In The Outdoors, Mooers

2. Be Expert With Map & Compass, Kjellstrom

3. Land Navigation Handbook, Kals

4. The Wilderness Route Finder, Rutstrum

Any other "must have" titles would be appreciated.

Blues, the one that helped me most is my 1960's edition of the Boy Scout Hand Book. Also the orienteering section of Camping and Woodscraft by Kephart

Hi Ravenn,

Don't have the Boy Scout manual, but I agree that Kephart's Camping and Woodcraft as well as Nessmuk's Woodcraft and Camping have great information on routefinding. I own them both.

The NOLS Wilderness Guide book is pretty good but it could use more illustrations to help the beginner. Knowledge For The Outdoors by Gary Kraus is good and has a lot of illustrations and detailed info on topos and route finding.

As a NOLS alumnus (1974) the NOLS Wilderness Guide was one I had to have.

A good book overall but at times a little too "PC".

I'll check out that other suggestion, Jeff.
