If you were going to buy one book on Wilderness Survival and one book on urban survival, which would they be?

Urban survival = ?
Wilderness survival = ?

Wilderness: 98.6 Degrees: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive by Cody Lundin.

Urban :When All Hell Breaks Loose: Stuff You Need To Survive When Disaster Strikes by Cody Lundin.

+1 for both of these.

They're both very informative and very readable.

Wilderness = SAS survival handbook (revised edition)
Can't go wrong with this one pal. Plenty of illustrations, practically every climate and scenario is covered. Very complete.
Also, check out Mike Hawke's "Green Beret survival manual." A lot of guys in this forum dismiss him, however, having read the SAS manual, I can tell you that the stuff he teaches are spot on with Wiseman's methods, and he even shows a couple of new things I haven't seen anywhere else. It's 600 and something pages. He used to be a medic in the special forces, therefore, some of his stuff on medicine is invaluable. Thick as a bible.

Lundin's 98.6 Degrees is a must read. Absolutely. But I find it to be more of a concepts book, rather than a how-to book. It's designed to address a survival scenario that might last at the most three days, with the primary goal being to get back to civilization as quickly and efficiently as possible.

A good companion, in my opinion, is Les Stroud's book, Survive!

For urban survival, I haven't seen anything better than Lundin's book, When All Hell Breaks Loose. Much more how-to oriented, designed to give ideas and techniques for long-term survival after a disaster, and he also covers a lot of the same material that he writes about in 98.6 Degrees.

I know we are supposed to stay on topic but if you are interested in a fun read try "The Zombie Survival guide" by Max Brooks. Amusing and you never know.... Lol

I didnt know it was that big a book! Im going to have to check it out some day.

I'll add "Wilderness Survival" by Greg Davenport, a former USAF Survival Instructor.

I just finished 98.6 and I liked it a lot.

My advice would be to read 98.6 first then Wilderness Survival (both before leaving home) and practice the techniques. Then read the SAS Survival Handbook and pack it in your pack or BOB as a reference tool ;)

Do yourself a favor and get the SAS Survival Manual by Wiseman, as well, it's dirt cheap on amazon and it's got the most diagrams and pictures of any survival book out there.
Either way you won't regret your purchase, the sense of humor in Hawkes book keeps you well interested.

I just finished 98.6 and it was a great no nonsense book. Cody tells you how it is. I am waiting for his other book to come in. Amazon is taking their sweet time

I have had/read many but I think SAS survival handbook was the best by far.
