best wood for a walking stick

Hi knifeline

I have found hazel to be the best for sticks as it grows nice and straight and is light weight but strong when seasoned. It also gorws just about everywhere as it used to be copiced (or whatever is the correct term for husbanding hazel) all over the country in the spaces between deciduous trees.

One of my oldest, most reliable walking sticks is a three foot length of English ash with a root knob top, and the bark still on the shaft. It is practically indestructible and should be as widely available in the UK as it is in the US.

Hazel is good, too. Obviously, sticks made out of oak or hickory will be strong. Canemasters likes these. I don't know about yew -- longbows were supposed to be flexible, not necessarily the best trait in a walking stick.

But a bit of flexibility will serve as a shock absorber. For orthopedic purposes this is valuable. I sometimes use a rattan crook top cane for this.

thanks for the replys,i was looking at hazel but just wondered what else would be good.
