Has anybody here heard of a "Beta Light" before? It is suggested for inclusion in a survival kit in the SAS Survival Handbook. Does anybody know where I can find one?

David,

In a Beta Light a phosphor is stimulated by beta particles from H-3. They are usually not very bright. You can see this type of lighting in some aircraft and hotel exit signs, luminescent night sights on guns, etc. Today a photon light or other LED flashlight with lithium batteries will probably serve you better in your kit.

Information on Beta Lights may be found at http://www.betalight.com/index.htm .

Shomer Tec used to sell them. Maybe they still do, I haven't looked at their catalog recently.

As I remember, they were fairly expensive and certain models (the larger and brighter ones) were restricted to Military and LE sales only.

They're not particularly bright, however, they will last for years and don't require batteries. They were primarily intended for specific applications; most of us are better served by something else (like the photon or other LED light).
