I've noticed that Cabela's exclusive Benchmade knives often times have D2 steel but the standard Benchmade steel seems to be 154CM.
So, if priced the same in the same model you were looking for, which would you choose between Benchmade's D2 or 154CM and why?

I personally like 154cm for the corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening. It also seems to be pretty tough and take edge impacts a little bit better.

I like D2 as well but in my usage it tends to rust a bit faster. On the other hand, it keeps a toothy edge pretty long.

I recommend both steel choices though, they both work great in EDC knives.

Sorry I wasn’t much help...

I have had only one d2 blade and I found it to chip on cardboard I didn’t keep it long but I have had a couple 154cm I find them easy to maintain strop and sharpen and I’m fine with edge retention never felt let down by it quick strop and good to go.

Benchmade does a good job with both. I picked 154 due to corrosion resistance but D2 will be close as it's semi-stainless. I imagine your poll is going to lean towards D2 because it will hold an edge longer.

D2 is a pain to sharpen, rusts, and holds an edge only marginally longer than 154CM. 154CM will take and hold a significantly more refined edge.

If you want a toothy beater steel, D2. For all-around use, definitely 154CM.

I feel the same way. I never felt D2 added much over 154cm.

Huh.....now that's interesting. I have had the opposite results.
The last blade I had in 154cm was a hogue ex04. I did not like it at all. It would lose its edge faster than just about any other steel I have owned.
D2 on the other hand on the adamas i just got has impressed me quite a bit. Holds an edge about like s30v and seems to be tougher. Wasnt that hard to sharpen either. Not that any steel Is that bad with the right setup(except m4, now that was some hard stuff there)

I like D2 a lot, but I'm also very comfortable with a working edge, which is where D2 tends to shine. If you want a polished, hair popping edge and resharpen once that starts to fade, 154CM is the way to go. If you're fine with an edge that will cut plenty adequately for a long, long time opt for D2.

D2 knives that I've owned held an sharp edge for a long time. However it will patina quickly if you do not clean it off after working with wet material. As people said before 154cm is a great "all around" steel that is easy to sharpen and will be more resistant to corrosion

Let's say both blades were coated; will most of you still lean towards 154?
Just genuinely interested in hearing opinions.
